Field Activity N197MW

Identifier N197MW
Alternate names N-1-97-MW
Purpose Map the offshore portion of the February 1995 Sleeping Bear Point landslide to better understand the affect of landslides on the coastal system in the Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore, gather information for a slope stability analysis, determine landslide history and framework geology near the Point.
Description Chief Scientist: Bruce Jaffe. Geophysical and Video data (Kleinsidescan, 3dot5khz, Geopulse, GPS, bottomtransponder, bathymetry, YoNav, computer) of field activity N-1-97-MW in Sleeping Bear Point, Michigan from 05/19/1997 to 05/22/1997
Location Michigan
Summary Ran side-scan sonar in reconnaissance and mosaic modes. Collected subbottom profiles. Collected underwater video to groundtruth side-scan images and to document slide features.
Info derived Extent of submarine portion of the 1995 landslide, geologic controls on sliding, volume sediment moved offshore during the 1995 and other older landslides, images of slide features.
Comments The following is the beginning of USGS Fact Sheet 020-98. In February 1995, a 1,600-foot stretch of popular beach at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore suddenly slid into the waters of northeastern Lake Michigan. The National Park Service (NPS) immediately requested the assistance of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in evaluating the hazard at the lakeshore. To protect the public, USGS and NPS scientists are conducting studies that will help predict when the landslide-prone area will move again.
