Status: Completed

Organization(s): USGS, St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center

Funding Program(s):

Principal Investigator(s): Bruce Richmond

Affiliate Investigator(s): Nathaniel Plant and Chris Smith, USGS St Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center; Chip Fletcher and Haunani Kane, University of Hawaii Manoa.

Information Specialist(s): SeanPaul La Selle, Brent Lunghino

Data Type(s): Electro-Magnetic: Ground Penetrating Radar, Imagery: Photo, Location-Elevation: Navigation, Location-Elevation: Transects, Sampling: Geology

Scientific Purpose/Goals: The geologic record in coastal marshes can provide evidence of extreme events that have impacted an area through washover deposits. The hydrodynamic and sediment transport processes occurring during extreme events are difficult to directly measure because of the rare and destructive nature of the events. We seek to improve the ability to understand depositional processes in washover deposits and interpret the sedimentary record in coastal marshes by investigating the sediment deposits from Hurricane Sandy.

Vehicle(s):

Start Port/Location: Beach Haven, NJ

End Port/Location: Beach Haven, NJ

Start Date: 2015-04-06

End Date: 2015-04-14

Equipment Used: Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), camera, Handheld GPS Nomad, Trimble R7 GPS (AS), Hand-grab sample, Push corer

Information to be Derived: Samples: Short sediment cores and sediment grab samples Data: Sedimentological descriptions, photographs, and topographic data
