Description:
Abstract:
Topographic data were collected in the Corte Madera Marsh, San Pablo National Wildlife Refuge Marsh, and at the time-series stations in the shallows adjacent to each marsh in Northern San Francisco Bay between April 2022 and September 2023. The topographic data were acquired using global satellite navigation system receivers that were either mounted on backpacks and hiked over the marsh surface or mounted on a survey rod held shipside against a deployed platform or on the water surface. Sometimes an additional staff was used in conjunction with the shipside survey rod to reach the platform, which we refer to as an integrated collection method.
Purpose:
Topographic data were collected as part of a study to produce information useful for prioritizing marsh restoration sites, assessing restoration actions, and understanding mechanisms of sediment delivery to marshes. These data are intended for researchers, students, policy makers, and the general public.

Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Survey-grade positioning for the topographic data were achieved with global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receivers operating in real time kinematic mode with differential corrections from a single GNSS base station placed on a benchmark with established coordinates relative to the North American Datum of 1983 (2011 realization). The position of the GNSS base station was established using two static occupations conforming to level 1 quality as defined by Rydlund and others (2012). Uncertainty in the horizontal positions of the topographic data relative to the GNSS base station were estimated during acquisition using Trimble Access software and provided for each measurement in the dataset. The estimated uncertainty in horizontal positions at the 95 percent confidence interval ranged between 0.001 and 0.114 m with a mean of 0.023 m. Uncertainty in the horizontal positions associated with variable posture of the surveyor during data collection is unknown.
Vertical_Positional_Accuracy:
Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Uncertainty in the elevations above the reference ellipsoid of relative to the GNSS base station were estimated during acquisition using Trimble Access software or via post processing using Trimble Business Center software. The estimated uncertainty in vertical positions at the 95 percent confidence interval ranged between 0.015 and 0.089 m with a mean of 0.043 m. Uncertainty in the horizontal positions associated with variable posture of the surveyor during data collection is unknown.

Process_Description:
Survey grade topographic data were collected with GNSS receivers mounted on either, survey rods, backpacks, or an integrated method which used a survey rod placed above a platform or object whose elevation above bed was known. Prior to data collection, vertical distances between the GNSS antennas and the ground were measured using a tape measure. Hand-held data collectors running Trimble Access were used to log raw data and display navigational information allowing surveyors to follow planned survey lines when appropriate. The positions of the topographic platforms collected in RTK mode were retained, and Trimble Business Center software was used to apply differential corrections to topographic data collected in autonomous mode when VHF communication with the base station failed. Orthometric elevations relative to the NAVD88 vertical datum were computed for all survey platforms, using National Geodetic Survey Geoid18 offsets. Orthometric heights in the North American Vertical Datum 1988 vertical datum were computed using National Geodetic Survey Geoid18 offsets.
