Abstract:
Profiles of salinity, temperature, turbidity, and particle size distribution were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center in South San Francisco Bay. Data were collected at depth intervals ranging between 0.5 and 2 m (depending on total water depth); sensors remained at each depth for 1-2 minutes. Each profile was collected from surface to bed, and the near-surface region was sampled again at the end of the profile to check steady-state conditions. Profiles were collected on 4 days: June 22, July 21, and December 3 of 2021, and on January 4, 2022 (UTC). Data files are grouped by season (summer or winter) and by instrument (CTD or LISST). No LISST data were collected in the winter. Users are advised to assess data quality carefully.
Purpose:
These data were collected to reveal particle size distributions through the water column, along with vertical suspended sediment concentration, salinity, and temperature variation. These data are intended for researchers, students, policy makers, and the general public.

The specified accuracy of the Sequoia Scientific LISST-200X is (volume concentration) 0.1 µl/l resolution; (particle size range) 1.00 – 500 µm in 36 log-spaced classes; (optical transmission): ± 0.1 percent of reading; (temperature): ±0.01 degrees C from -5 to 45 degrees C. The specified accuracy of the RBR Concerto CTD is (Conductivity) ±0.003 mS/cm with typical stability of 0.010 mS/cm per year; (Temperature) ±0.0002 degrees C with typical stability of 0.002 degrees C per year in the range of -5 to 35 degrees C; (Pressure) ±0.05% FS with typical stability of 0.01% FS per year in the range 0 to 50 dbar. Instrument was calibrated in September 2020.
