Description:
Abstract:
Multi-channel seismic (MCS) reflection data were collected as part of a geophysical survey aboard the NOAA Ship Rainier during two legs at sea, the first from 8/28/2018 to 9/7/2018 and the second from 9/10/2018 to 9/21/2018. The data were collected using a SIG 2-Mille minisparker and a 64-channel streamer, although the majority of the survey was conducted using a 56-channel setup due to technical issues with one 8-channel section early on in the survey. The MCS data were processed to post-stack time migration and include filtering and other noise removal corrections.
Purpose:
This datasest is one of several collected as part of the California Deepwater Investigations and Groundtruthing (Cal DIG I) project, which focuses on the offshore south-central region of California at water depths of 500 to 1,200 meters, in Federal waters outside of the State of California three nautical mile limit. The goal of study is to conduct a reconnaissance survey of the outer continental shelf of south-central California for the purpose of improving regional models of seafloor (benthic) habitats, assessing geologic hazards, and sedimentary processes. Geophysical and geological data from this project are needed to address important issues associated with marine spatial planning, ecosystem assessments, geohazards, and thereby the potential for alternative energy infrastructure (namely floating wind turbines) offshore south-central California.

Process_Description:
Subbottom data were collected during USGS cruise 2018-641-FA using a 64-channel Geometrics GeoEel digital hydrophone streamer; fitted with a Applied Acoustics power supply, and an SIG SLP 790 Sparker Electrode. The (1.625 meter group spacing for the first 4 sections and 3.125 meter group spacing for the last 8 sections) streamer floats had to be removed at sea they were breaking the surface of the ocean surface often. Streamer and sparker depths were adjusted using floats or by adding weights when necessary but resulted with a sagging streamer and geometry issues. Section #4 of the streamer malfunctioned at sea and was removed, reducing the number of channels from 64 to 56. Pre-processing and quality control were done upon collection via two Sioseis scripts: 1-SIO_USE_LINE_##.txt and 2-SIO_CDP_GATHER.txt. Back in the PCSMC office, reflection data post processing was done in ARGO by Paradigm Geophysical. First, channels polarity had to be flipped, bad traces (due to shutdowns) were edited out and velocity picks were chosen for each individual line. The processing frow used in ARGO is as follows: two 80-600 bandpass filters, spherical divergence gain, AGC applied over a 1000ms gate, normal moveout correction (constant 1480m/s velocity), swell correction statics, three trace mean runmix filter, automatic noise frequency suppression, water column mute, two pass prestack spiking deconvolution, stack, post-stack predictive deconvolution, 80-600 post-stack bandpass filter, post-stack AGC, post-stack three trace mean runmix filter, time migration, post-migration 3 trace runmix filter, and correct navigation written to header bytes 81 and 85.
