Abstract:
This data release contains processed high-resolution multichannel sparker seismic-reflection (MCS) data that were collected aboard Humboldt State University’s R/V Coral Sea in October of 2018 on U.S. Geological Survey cruise 2018-658-FA on the shelf and slope between Cape Blanco, Oregon, and Cape Mendocino, California. MCS data were collected to characterize quaternary deformation and sediment dynamics along the southern Cascadia margin. MCS data were collected coincidentally with chirp sub-bottom data.
Purpose:
The USGS collected high-resolution sparker MCS profiles in October of 2018 along the southern Cascadia margin and marine forearc between Cape Blanco, Oregon, and Cape Mendocino, California. Primary goals of this survey were to image the offshore portion of the Quaternary active Little Salmon and Mad River fault zones. Other goals were to image the stratigraphy of Trinidad, Sixes, and Rogue canyons. MCS data were collected using a Delta Sparker source and recorded on an 88-channel digital streamer. Chirp sub-bottom data were collected using an Edgetech 512 chirp towfish. These data and information are intended for science researchers, students, policy makers, and general public.

The multichannel seismic-reflection profiles were acquired with a 6.4 kJ sparker source towed at 3 meters depth below the sea surface and fired at 2.5 to 7 second intervals, depending on water depth. Record lengths ranged between 2 and 7.5 seconds and were recorded in SEGD format using an 88-channel digital streamer with 1.5625 and 3.125 meter receiver group spacings, 100m total length including lead-in section, towed at 3 meters below the sea surface. Survey speeds were approximately 4.5 knots.

Seismic-reflection data were processed using Reveal seismic software by Shearwater. Processing steps included conversion from SEGD to SEGY, navigation conversion to UTM zone 10N, killing of bad channels, despike high amplitude noisy channels to twice the mean amplitude, geometry calculation for each receiver group, water column mute, FK filter, velocity picking for normal move out, trim statics to correct for swell variations along the streamer, stack, post stack migration at 1500 m/s, bandpass filter 30-70-800-100 Hz, gated gap deconvolution designed every trace, 300ms ACG, water column mute, and output to SEGY format.
