Title:
Sediment grain size data from samples collected offshore Oceanside, southern California during field activity 2017-686-FA from 2017-10-23 to 2017-10-31
Abstract:
This section of the data release contains grain-size analysis of twenty-six seafloor surface grab samples that were collected aboard the R/V Snavely in 2017 on U.S. Geological Survey cruise 2017-686-FA offshore Oceanside, southern California. The samples were collected at strategic locations along the same transects as seismic-reflection lines oriented to assess sand and gravel resources in Federal and State waters for potential use in future beach nourishment projects along stretches of the coast where critical erosion hotspots have been identified. Samples were collected at 23 locations using a Van Veen sediment sampler along 4 shore-perpendicular transects spaced 5 to 9 km apart, aligned with previously collected seismic profile lines, at depths ranging from about 20 to 80 m. One sample on the outer shelf (BSS-06) was collected to evaluate an area of suspected sand occurrence. Two duplicate samples were collected at one location (BSS-08) in order to evaluate local sample variability.

Why was the data set created?

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) collected seafloor sediment samples in 2017 offshore Oceanside, southern California. The goal of the sampling part survey was to provide a detailed analysis of sand resources. This cruise was funded through partnerships with the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) and the State of California Ocean Protection Council (OPC).

How was the data set created?

  1. From what previous works were the data drawn?
  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?
    Date: 31-Oct-2017 (process 1 of 2)
Twenty-six sediment samples were collected on October 31, 2017 at a total 23 locations using a small Van Veen grab sampler from the R/B Park Snavely in water depths between 20 and 80 meters.
    Date: 15-Dec-2017 (process 2 of 2)
The grain-size distributions of sediment samples were determined in the USGS Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center (PCMSC) sediment lab. Approximately 20g of sediment was sub-sampled and 10mL of 35 percent hydrogen peroxide was added to sit overnight to remove organics. The sample was heated at 250 degree C to remove any remaining hydrogen peroxide and was placed in an ultrasonic bath to liberate the mud (silt and clay) fraction. Subsequently the sample was centrifuged for 1/2 hour and 1 hour to remove soluble salts. Samples were funneled through a 2mm and a 63um sieve to separate the gravel (>2mm), sand (63um to 2mm), and mud (<63um). Both sand and gravel fractions were dried in an 80 degree C oven and weighed. 5mL of 10 percent sodium hexametaphosphate was added to the mud fraction cylinder and distilled water was added to total the volume to 1L. The mud and calgon solution sat overnight to ensure removal of the negative charges from the mud particles. Subsequently, a 20mL aliquot was taken from the 1L mud fraction to determine the weight of the mud. The particle size distribution of the mud and sand fractions were analyzed separately via the Beckman Coulter LS 13 320 aqueous liquid module. The gravel fraction particle size was analyzed via dry sieving. The gravel, sand, and mud grain size data were all reincorporated back together using the pcSDSZ program in the PCMSC sediment lab, and the grain size data was reported in percent 1/4-phi size intervals. 3. What similar or related data should the user be aware of?

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?
    Identified as best available version
  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?
Position data were provided by a Hemisphere V100 Global Positioning System using L1, C/A code and carrier phase smoothing with a stated accuracy of 60 centimeters.
  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?
  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?
Dataset is considered complete for the information presented, as described in the abstract. Users are advised to read the rest of the metadata record carefully for additional details.
  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?
Sample data were collected during USGS cruise 2017-686-FA using small hand-deployed Van Veen grab sampler. Once on deck, samples were recovered from the sampler, bagged and labeled. Quality control was conducted during the collection process.

How can someone get a copy of the data set?
