Abstract:
Sediment cores were collected in Ozette Lake, Washington, in 2019, and cores were scanned using X-ray fluorescence (XRF). These data were used to investigate submarine landslide deposits triggered by large Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquakes.
Purpose:
Identification of fault-related submarine hazards is a primary mission of the USGS Coastal and Marine Geology Program. In the US Pacific Northwest region, the greatest earthquake and tsunami threat is posed by the Cascadia Subduction Zone. From 2019-2021 the USGS carried out a detailed field investigation of earthquake-triggered landslide deposits in Ozette Lake, WA, to reconstruct the timing and severity of large subduction zone earthquakes in northern Cascadia. Field data collected as part of this investigation include boomer single-channel seismic, chirp seismic, and sediment cores. These data are intended to further our understanding of geologic hazards relating to the Cascadia Subduction Zone, improve risk assessments for local communities and critical infrastructure, and to provide data for future research on regional tectonic and sedimentary history of northern Cascadia.

Vibracore samples were acquired in July of 2019 during USGS field activity 2019-622-FA throughout Ozette Lake in Washington. A Rossfelder P-5 vibracorer was used aboard the USGS Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center's (PCMSC) coring Platform Hadai. Sediment cores were sent to PCMSC for processing and archiving.

X-RAY FLUORESCENCE ANALYSIS: Cores were segmented into 150 cm (or shorter) sections and split into "working" and "archive" halves in the lab. Sediment surfaces were cleaned and smoothed on the "archive" halves of split cores. A four micron-thick ultralene film that is transparent to x-rays was applied to the sediment surface in order to protect the XRF window. Cores were loaded onto the track of a Geotek Multi Sensor Core Logger (MSCL) with an Olympus Delta Professional XRF gun mounted to an arm that moves the XRF sensor vertically on and off the core surface. The XRF sensor was calibrated before each scan using a 316-alloy reference coin. The XRF window is 1x1 cm square and measurements were collected every 1 cm downcore, automated by the motors on the MSCL. The XRF was run in "geochem" mode with two beams at 26-28 seconds each. Data were processed with Geotek MSCL software and elemental abundances are reported in parts per million (ppm). Geochem mode processes the data as a closed sum compositional dataset, assuming that all components add up to 100 percent. Elements lighter than Mg are grouped into the "Light Elements" (LE) category in order to maintain a closed compositional dataset.
