Abstract:

Underwater video imagery was collected in March 2014 in the nearshore waters of Faga'alu Bay on the Island of Tutuila, American Samoa, as part of the U.S. Geological Survey Coastal and Marine Geology Program's Pacific Coral Reefs Project. Included here are 40 video files in .mpg format and an Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) shapefile with location (navigation) points every two seconds.

Purpose:

The imagery was collected to improve seafloor characterization and for the development and groundtruthing of benthic habitat maps.

Video footage was collected using two platforms and two camera systems. On 04-06 March 2014 imagery was collected using a GoPro Hero 3 camera from a fixed mount on a Boston Whaler. Data were collected while underway, typically in water depths greater than 5 meters, in conjunction with the collection of bathymetry and backscatter data.Footage collected on 06 March between 20:38 and 23:04 was collected from the Boston Whaler using a towed camera system called the MiniBOBSled. This system, developed at the USGS Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center, has a Sony FCB-H11 block camera which transmits full resolution high definition video (1920x1080i) to the surface via a fiber-optic connection. Footage collected on 07-08 March 2014 was collected using the GoPro Hero 3 from a fixed mount on a kayak. Both systems made use of a VMS200, a commercially available device from Red Hen Systems, LLC, to encode GPS data on the left audio track of the video as it is recorded. By encoding the real-time GPS data on the video's audio track the spatial locations of the video can be extracted, or indexed, using Red Hen System's proprietary software Media Mapper.
