Abstract:
Charcoal counts and soil, water, and reservoir sediment-core geochemistry were characterized eight months after the November 2021 Muckamuck Fire in the North Fork Salmon Creek basin and Conconully Reservoir, Washington, the receiving water body. Parameters include sand-sized charcoal, Cesium-137, excess Lead-210, aqueous and solid-phase elemental chemistry, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon concentrations (PAHs). Grain size and carbon were measured in select intervals in the longest sediment core.

    WATERSHED SOIL AND SEDIMENT CORE COLLECTION. Soils from unburned, low, moderate, and high burn severity areas in the North Fork Salmon Creek drainage basin were sampled from 12 locations below the duff layer at 0-2 centimeters depth. Soils for organic contaminant analyses were collected into pre-cleaned glass jars and stored frozen. Sediment cores were collected from the North Fork Salmon Creek delta (gravity core, 35-centimeter-long, June 25, 2022) and near the Conconully Dam and outflow (Scientific Devices Inc. Vibracore-D, 323-centimeter-long, October 6, 2023).

    PASSIVE SAMPLER DEPLOYMENT. Diffusive gradient thin-film (DGT) passive samplers (DGT(R) Research, UK) that collected dissolved elements in stream water were deployed at four sites in the North Fork Salmon Creek basin: upstream of the 2021 Muckamuck Fire perimeter, at the USGS gaging station on the mainstem in a high soil-burn-severity area, in a tributary in a high soil-burn-severity area, and in a engineered diversion channel during 06/25/2022-08/06/2022 and 08/23/2025-10/07/2023. In 2022, two samplers were lost after a thunderstorm triggered a debris flow in the burn scar that buried the deployment sites. Visual inspection showed that five membranes contained particulate matter or were desiccated and were omitted from the data table.

    CHARCOAL COUNTS. One-quarter teaspoon of sediment was gently agitated with bleach at room temperature for two hours without changing particle sizes. Stainless steel sieves were used to retain particles 0.125 mm in diameter and larger. Retained particles were rinsed in a water bath, transferred to a petri dish and dried completely at 45 degrees Celsius. Charcoal particles were counted under a stereo-microscope.

    SEDIMENT TOTAL ORGANIC CARBON CONTENT. Sediment organic carbon content was determined at the USGS Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center Carbon Laboratory. Approximately 1 gram of sediment was dried overnight at 80 degrees Celsius and pulverized by hand in a mortar and pestle. Total carbon (TC) was determined by incineration at 950 degrees Celsius (UIC CM 5200 furnace) of 20 milligrams of dry sediment loaded into in foil capsules. Total inorganic carbon (TIC) was determined by perchloric acid digestion (UIC CM 5130 acid digester) of 20 milligrams of dry sediment. Total organic carbon (TOC) was calculated as the difference between TC and TIC. The calcium carbonate (CaCO3) content of sediment in weight percent was determined by multiplying TIC by 8.333, the mass ratio of CaCO3 to carbon. Averages of process duplicate values are reported.     SEDIMENT GRAIN SIZE ANALYSIS. Sediment grain size distributions were determined at the USGS Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center (PCMSC) Sediment Laboratory. To remove organic material, 10 milliliters of 35 percent hydrogen peroxide were added to 20 grams of sediment. The sample was heated to 250 degrees Celsius to remove any remaining hydrogen peroxide and was placed in an ultrasonic bath to liberate the less than 0.063 millimeter-diameter fine fraction. The sample was centrifuged for 1.5 hours in deionized water to remove soluble salts. Samples were funneled through 2 millimeter- and 0.063 millimeter-diameter mesh sieves to separate gravel-sized (greater than 2 millimeter), sand-sized (0.063 to 2 millimeter), and mud-sized (less than 0.063 millimeter) particles. The sand and gravel fractions were dried at 80 degrees Celsius and weighed. Five milliliters of sodium hexametaphosphate were added to the mud fraction and a 20-milliliter aliquot was taken from a 1-liter graduated cylinder to determine the weight of the mud. The particle-size distribution of the mud and sand fraction was analyzed separately using a Beckman Coulter LS 13 320, and the gravel, sand, and mud results were integrated into a single grain-size distribution for each sample.     SHORT-LIVED COSMOGENIC RADIONUCLIDE ACTIVITIES. Prior to quantification of short-lived radionuclide activities, bulk sediment was oven-dried at 60 degrees Celsius, ground by hand in a mortar and pestle and packed into 10 milliliter graduated polystyrene vials. Vials were capped and sealed to prevent gas exchange, then left to equilibrate for at least 21 days. Samples and reference materials with the same geometry were counted for 24 hours in a high purity, low background germanium (HPGe) well detector at the USGS PCMSC Radiochemistry Lab. Activities of Cesium-137 were counted at 661 keV, Lead-210 at 46.5 keV, and Radium-226 as the average of indirect peaks at 351.87 keV (Lead-214) and 609.31 keV (Bismuth-214). Unsupported, or excess, Lead-210 was calculated by subtracting supported Lead-210 (assumed to equal average Radium-226 activity) from total Lead-210.

    SOLID-PHASE ELEMENTAL CHEMISTRY. Sediment (solid-phase) was oven-dried at 60 degrees Celsius, disaggregated gently with a mortar and pestle to avoid changing grain sizes, and dry-sieved through stainless steel sieves to obtain the less than 0.063 millimeter-diameter fine fraction. Fines were sent to the Analytical Chemistry Project of the USGS Geology, Geophysics, and Geochemistry Science Center (GGGSC), which contracted SGS Canada, a nationally accredited laboratory, for analyses of major, minor, and trace element contents using three methods: total mercury was measured by cold-vapor atomic absorption spectroscopy (CVAAS); a near-total four-acid digestion (annotated as "multi-acid" in the data table) that has low detection limits for trace element determinations; and a total digestion with a sodium peroxide fusion (annotated as "fusion" in the data table) that quantifies elements in acid-resistant accessory minerals. Quantification was performed by a combination of inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) for major and minor elements and inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS) for trace elements.     PARENT AND ALKYLATED POLYCYCLIC AROMATIC HYDROCARBON (PAH) CONCENTRATIONS. 76 parent and alkylated PAHs were analyzed at SGS AXYS Analytical Services Ltd. (AXYS), an ultra-trace laboratory, by their extended PAH method. Samples were spiked with surrogate standards, Soxhlet-extracted with dichloromethane, and cleaned up with column chromatography and activated copper. PAHs were quantified by isotope dilution low resolution gas chromatography mass spectrometry in multiple ion detection mode to acquire data for target analytes and paired surrogates to minimize false positive identifications. Sample-specific concentration Reporting Limits (RL) are reported for every quantified analyte. AXYS reports data with three significant figures (XXX, XX.X, X.XX, etc.) rather than a fixed measurement resolution so results are formatted in scientific notation in the data table.     AQUEOUS MULTI-ELEMENT CHEMISTRY. Diffusive gradient thin-films (DGTs) were extracted according to manufacturer specifications. Surface contamination was removed by soaking DGTs in 10 mL deionized water in 15-mL test tubes and shaking on a rocker shaker for 1 h. After surface cleaning, the DGTs were placed in 5 mL of 10 percent (v/v) HNO3 eluent solution and processed via ultrasounds for 2 h to extract the retained trace elements. Then, the eluent was diluted to 10 mL with deionized water for ICP-MS analysis. Determinations were performed by a Perkin Elmer NexION 2000B quadrupole ICP-MS equipped with a dynamic reaction cell at USGS GGGSC Aqueous Trace Element Analysis Laboratory. Multiple isotopes of target elements, if available, were analyzed to account for molecular and matrix interferences. External calibration method was used for ICP-MS determinations. Calibration accuracy and stability were verified with every run with independent calibration standards (ICV) and continued calibration standards (CCV), respectively, and were within +/- 15 percent of accepted values. Values outside this criterion were flagged. Limits of detection (LOD) were calculated with every run for each element/isotope.

    SEDIMENT GRAIN SIZE ANALYSIS: The laser particle counter was calibrated with three manufacturer-provided standards every day. Process duplicates were analyzed every 20 samples and were within 15 percent. CARBON ANALYSIS: Process duplicates for carbon analyses were run for every sample and were within 15 percent. SHORT-LIVED RADIONUCLIDE ACTIVITIES: Radionuclide activities were calculated by comparison to reference standards with the same geometry and counting time. Reported uncertainties include 1-standard-deviation counting errors, detector efficiency, and background corrections. Detector efficiency for Cesium-137 was determined using International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Standard Reference Material 300. Detector efficiency for Lead-210 was determined using IAEA standards RGU-1 and RGTh-1. SOLID-PHASE ELEMENTAL CHEMISTRY: For elemental chemistry determinations, long-term internal reference materials were used to standardize the data. The percent recovery for all elements was within 15 percent of reference values for concentrations that were not less than five times the limit of detection. AQUEOUS MULTI-ELEMENT CHEMISTRY: USGS T-series water standards and blanks were analyzed for quality control with every run. Measured values were within +/- 20 percent of accepted values. Elements not meeting this criterion and values outside of the calibration-standard range were flagged as informational. POLYCYCLIC AROMATIC HYDROCARBONS (PAHs): External calibration curves, internal standards, lab blanks, and spiked matrix samples were analyzed with every batch. Percent recovery acceptance criteria in spiked matrix samples for the 16 priority PAHs were 70-130 percent except for Fluorene, which was 60-140 percent, and 50-150 percent for other PAHs. All quantified values are shown without censorship with corresponding lab flags.
