Description:
Abstract:
This portion of the USGS data release presents acoustic-backscatter data collected during surveys performed in Floras Lake, Oregon in June 2018 (USGS Field Activity Number 2018-636-FA). Lake bed backscatter data were collected using a personal watercraft (PWC) equipped with a sidescan sonar system and global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receivers. The sonar system consisted of a Tritech Starfish 990F with a 1-MHz transducer and a 0.3-degree horizontal beam width. Output from the GNSS receivers and sonar system were combined in real time on the PWC by a computer running HYPACK hydrographic survey software. Navigation information was displayed on a video monitor, allowing PWC operators to navigate along survey lines at speeds of 2 to 3 m/s. Survey-grade positions of the PWCs were achieved with a single-base station and differential post-processing. Positioning data from the GNSS receivers were post-processed using Waypoint Grafnav to apply differential corrections from a GNSS base station with known horizontal and vertical coordinates relative to the North American Datum of 1983.
Purpose:
Data were obtained to document the surface characteristics of the lakebed in Floras Lake, Oregon and were collected to inform vibracoring efforts. These data are intended for science researchers, students, policy makers, and the general public. These data can be used with geographic information systems or other software to identify topographic and lake bathymetric features.

Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Survey-grade positions of the personal watercraft (PWCs) were achieved with global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receivers and a single GNSS base station placed on a benchmark coordinates relative to the North American Datum of 1983. The position and elevation of the benchmark were derived from two static GNSS occupations on June 19 and 20, 2018, with durations of 7 and 6 hours, respectively. The equipment for the static occupations consisted of a Trimble R10 GNSS receiver and fixed-height tripod. The static observations were processed using the National Geodetic Survey Online Positioning User Service (OPUS). The processed positions from each occupation were averaged to attain the final coordinates of the benchmark with an average horizontal accuracy of 1 cm. Positioning data from the PWCs were post-processed using Waypoint Grafnav software to apply differential corrections from the GNSS base station. Manufacturer reported accuracy for the differentially corrected horizontal positions for the GNSS rover trajectories is 0.8 cm + 0.5 ppm. Baselines from the GNSS base station varied between 100 m and 2.5 km with a mean of 1 km, suggesting the average horizontal accuracy of survey vessel positions to be about 1 cm. Combining the uncertainty in the benchmark and watercraft yields a total uncertainty of 2 cm. Uncertainty in the horizontal positions associated with pitch and roll of the survey vessels is unknown. Accuracies of final products may be lower due to total propagated uncertainties of the mapping systems, which include sonar system, GNSS system, and navigation, as well as data processing that includes sounding cleaning, and gridding.

Process_Description:
Acoustic-backscatter data were collected on June 20, 2018, using a sidescan sonar system and global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) receivers mounted on personal watercraft (PWC). The sonar system consisted of a Tritech Starfish 990F sidescan sonar system with a 1-MHz transducer and a 0.3-degree horizontal beam width. Positioning of the survey vessels was determined at 10 Hz using survey-grade GNSS receivers. Output from the GNSS receivers and sonar systems were combined in real time on the PWC by a computer running HYPACK hydrographic survey software. Navigation information was displayed on a video monitor, allowing PWC operators to navigate along survey lines at speeds of 2 to 3 m/s.

Acoustic-backscatter data were merged with post-processed positioning data, and backscatter files were adjusted to minimize the effect of aquatic vegetation, and spurious soundings were removed using SonarWiz software (version 6). Processed backscatter grids were exported as a GeoTIFF and projected in cartesian coordinates using the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM), Zone 10 North, meters coordinate system.
