Abstract:
High-resolution chirp sub-bottom data were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey and the University of Washington in February of 2017 west of Seattle in Puget Sound and in Lake Washington, Washington. Data were collected aboard the University of Washington’s R/V Clifford A. Barnes during USGS field activity 2017-612-FA using an Edgetech SB-512i sub-bottom profiler. Sub-bottom acoustic penetration spans several tens of meters and is variable by location.
Purpose:
Data were acquired to support the USGS Coastal and Marine Hazards and Resources Program’s earthquake, tsunami, and landslide active margin field studies to aide hazard assessment of the Seattle Fault zone in central Puget Sound and Lake Washington. Data were collected to characterize recent deformation and estimate earthquake recurrence on the Seattle Fault zone. These data and information are intended for science researchers, students from elementary through college, policy makers, and general public.

Chirp sub-bottom data were collected using an Edgetech-512i sub-bottom profiler. Because file sizes were limited to 200 MB during acquisition, there may be several line parts per navigation line. Turn lines are denoted with a ‘t’ following the line number, are generally low quality. Data were corrected for sub-bottom profiler tow depth, and converted to envelope. Navigation was converted from seconds of arc to UTM zone 10N. Dataset is divided into two data zip files based on geographic location: 2017-612-FA_LakeWashington_chirp.zip and 2017-612-FA_PugetSound_chirp.zip.
