High resolution topography for two pools on the Carmel River, central California, 2014 to 2019
Abstract:
High-resolution topographic surveys were conducted at two pools on the Carmel River between 2014 and 2019 using a survey-grade total station. The Dam Reach pool (DMPOOL) is located within the Dam Reach, approximately 450 meters downstream of the former site of the San Clemente Dam. The Sleepy Hollow pool (SHPOOL) is located within the Sleepy Hollow reach, approximately 2.25 kilometers downstream of the former site of the San Clemente Dam. Both pools were surveyed in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2019 using a total station, in conjunction with the channel cross-section surveys also conducted as part of this study (see accompanying file within this data release for topographic survey transect data). For the 2015 survey, a kayak-mounted single-beam echosounder was also used to augment the data collected with the total station. Horizontal and vertical coordinates are provided for each point surveyed. Vertical coordinates are referenced to the NAVD88 vertical datum, in units of meters. Horizontal coordinates are referenced to the NAD83(2011) reference frame, projected in Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) coordinates (zone 10N), in units of meters.

    Topographic measurements were made at Dam Reach pool (DMPOOL) and at Sleepy Hollow pool (SHPOOL) in water years 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2019 using a total station and a surveyor wading with a prism rod. Survey control was established using static GPS occupations on benchmarks. Survey control network densification was conducted using closed traverses with a total station. For the 2015 survey, a kayak-mounted single-beam echosounder was used in conjunction with a robotic total station to augment the regular total station surveys.     Initial survey control for all topographic transects was established using static GPS occupations, which have an estimated horizontal accuracy of around 1.5 cm. Survey control densification was completed using a closed traverse with a total station. Topographic measurements were completed with a total station, and a surveyor wading with a prism rod. Repeat check measurements conducted during the surveys on points with established coordinates suggest a horizontal precision of less than 2 cm for these measurements. In 2015, a kayak-mounted single-beam echosounder combined with a robotic total station was used to augment the total station surveys. The horizontal precision of these measurements is estimated to be similar to those of the total station points, around 2 cm. Additional horizontal errors resulting from the echosounder beam width, and errors resulting from echosounder tilt are unknown.
