Abstract:
Geochemical analysis of authigenic carbonates from the Cascadia Subduction Zone. Powdered carbonate samples for stable carbon (delta-C-13) and oxygen (delta-O-18) isotopes and carbonate phase were analyzed as a proxy for potential fluid sources, and to better understand how process, such as mixing, and oxidation, can alter the initial fluid isotopic composition and the archived fluid-source signature in the authigenic carbonates.
Purpose:
These samples were collected and analyzed as part of an effort to determine the origin and occurrence of venting along the Cascadia Subduction Zone, including determining linkages between seeps and submarine tectonic geomorphology.
Supplemental_Information:
Authigenic carbonate samples were collected by remotely operated vehicles (ROV) during several cruises with USGS participation (USGS field activities 2019-619-FA and 2019-672-FA) as well as samples donated from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) during the RB-01-05-2, NA095 and NA128 cruises (USGS field activities 2020-649-DD, 2020-650-DD, and 2022-605-DD, respectively).

Mineralogy was determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) using a Philips XRD with graphite monochromator at 40 kV and 45 mA. Step scans were run from 5 degrees to 65 degrees 2-theta with 0.02 degrees steps, using CuK-alpha radiation and a count time of 2 seconds per step. XRD digital scan data were analyzed using the Philips X'Pert High Score search-and-match function to identify minerals.
