Why was the data set created?

Characterization of the advection rate of groundwater onto the reef, in conjunction with measurements of circulation and waves and profiles of resistivity on the shoreline will be used to assess the potential for terrestrial groundwater intrusion on the reef and the sources and fate of these water masses.

How was the data set created?

  1. From what previous works were the data drawn?

The method by which groundwater advection rate is determined from measurements of Radon and Temperature and Salinity was first described in this journal article by Burnett and Dulaiova.
  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?
    Date: 03-Aug-2016 (process 1 of 5)
Radon (Rn-222) concentration data were collected with a DURRIDGE RAD7 radon detector. The alpha decay of Rn-222 was detected at 3-minute intervals with the RAD7 in SNIFF mode. In SNIFF mode, the instrument detects radon entry points and gushers, and it recovers from high radon exposures in minutes. At the end of each run, the detector printed out a complete report. The RAD7 data were QA/QC’d, and raw counts of radon were exported using the manufacturer’s CAPTURE software. Conductivity and water level (CTD) data were collected with a YSI Castaway CTD Profiler.
    Date: 11-Oct-2018 (process 2 of 5)
Groundwater advection rates were determined from the radon and CTD data using the methodology of Burnett and Dulaiova (2003). Raw radon and CTD data are available from the authors upon request. Data sources used in this process:
