Description:
Abstract:
High-resolution multichannel minkisparker seismic-reflection (MCS) profiles were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey in September and October of 2016 from the northern portion of the Santa Barbara Basin offshore southern California. Data were collected aboard the USGS R/V Parke Snavely and NOAA R/V Shearwater during field activity 2016-666-FA using a SIG 2-mille minisparker and recorded using 48- or 24-channel Geometrics digital hydrophone streamer. Sub-bottom acoustic penetration spans several hundreds of meters and is variable by location.
Purpose:
Data were acquired to support USGS geologic hazards projects to aide hazard assessment within the Santa Barbara Basin. High-resolution multichannel minisparker seismic-reflection, multibeam-bathymetry and acoustic-backscatter data were collected to investigate the causes and consequences of submarine landslides in the Santa Barbara Basin. These data and information are intended for science researchers, students from elementary through college, policy makers, and general public.
Supplemental_Information:
Additional information about the field activities from which these data were derived is available online at:

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Seismic-reflection profiles were acquired using a 1.2kJ Joule minisparker source and recorded with a 24-channel Geometrics digital seismic streamer with 3.125m group spacing (for lines collected aboard the R/V Parke Snavely named with the SN- prefix) or a 48-channel Geometrics digital seismic streamer with 3.125m group spacing (for lines collected aboard the R/V Shearwater named with the SH- prefix).
Process_Date: 20161005
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
MCS profiles were processed using SIOSEIS and Echos seismic software. SIOSEIS processing included conversion from SEGD to SEGY and geometry. Echos processing included NMO, spherical divergence gain, three trace runmix, 80-1000Hz bandpass filter, static corrections to adjust for swell along the streamer, dip filtering, stack, water column mute, trace balance, finite difference time migration, post-stack predictive deconvolution, AGC, water column mute and a second 3 trace runmix. Navigation was converted from seconds of arc to UTM zone 11N.
