Description:
Abstract:
An Ellipsoidally Referenced Survey (ERS) using a Teledyne Reson SeaBat T50-P multibeam echosounder was conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center (SPCMSC) in Grand Bay Alabama/Mississippi (AL/MS) May 7-10, 2019. This dataset, Grand_Bay_2019_MBES_xyz.zip, includes the processed point data (x,y,z), as derived from a 1-meter (m) bathymetric grid from two separate sensor configurations, which were acquired independently. One configuration utilized a tilted sonar head (62.5 degrees to port), and the other utilized a flat configuration.
Purpose:
The purpose of the survey was to assess the capabilities of the Teledyne Reson SeaBat T50-P multibeam echosounder and attempt to capture the eroding marsh edges at areas of interest within Grand Bay AL/MS. To extend the horizontal coverage and ensonify the shallow water marsh edges, the head of the system was tilted at an angle of 62.5 degrees to the port side of the vessel. Additionally, data were collected utilizing a flat sonar configuration at all locations around the bay. Data were collected during USGS field activity number (FAN) 2019-320-FA aboard the research vessel (R/V) Jabba Jaw, a 22-foot (ft) fiberglass shallow draft center console catamaran. Additional survey and data details are available from the USGS Coastal and Marine Geoscience Data System (CMGDS) at,
https://cmgds.marine.usgs.gov/fan_info.php?fan=2019-320-FA.
Supplemental_Information:
The processed sonar data are provided as an American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII) x,y,z point data file. These values are not the individual soundings, but nodes from a 1-m bathymetric grid. The Z value for the node is generated by utilizing a Combined Uncertainty and Bathymetry Estimator (CUBE) surface and has an estimated total value of uncertainty (Calder and Wells, 2007). The bathymetry data were collected and processed in the World Geodetic System of 1984 (WGS84) reference system and were subsequently transformed horizontally, using the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) VDatum version 4.0 (v.4.0.1) transformation software (
https://vdatum.noaa.gov/), to the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD83 [2011]) and vertically to the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88) relative to the GEOID model of 2012A (GEOID12A).
