Title:
The use of ERT and CRP methodologies to assess the magnitude of submarine groundwater discharge into Indian River Lagoon, Florida
Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: Publication (Journal)
Description:
Abstract:
Stretching along approximately 200 kilometers (km) of the Atlantic Coast of central Florida, Indian River Lagoon is one of the most biologically diverse estuarine systems in the continental United States. This shallow, brackish lagoon varies in width from about 0.5–9.0 km, with substantial human infrastructure lining both shores. Scientists from the U. S. Geological Survey (USGS) St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center used continuous resistivity profiling (CRP), a towed electronic array, to investigate submarine groundwater discharge at Eau Gallie North, a study site located along the western shore of the central section of Indian River Lagoon. The CRP array was towed behind a boat along five shore-parallel transects located between 125-750 meters (m) offshore and traversing ~ 1.5 km along north-south transects. Additional, subsequent resistivity surveys will be conducted along these same tracklines, at various times to determine temporal variability. Since resistivity is a function of both geology and salinity, it is assumed that temporal shifts will reflect salinity changes, as the underlying geology will be presumed to remain constant.
Purpose:
Dissemination of resistivity, water column, and global positioning system (GPS) data collected from Indian River Lagoon in December 2016 and January 2017 (USGS Field Activity Numbers [FAN] 2016-369-FA, 2017-306-FA).
Supplemental_Information:
To ensure that USGS-St. Petersburg data management protocols were followed, each survey was assigned the following USGS FAN: 2016-369-FA (December 2016, Project ID 16SGD03) and 2017-306-FA (January 2017, Project ID 17SGD01). Additional survey and data details are available from the U.S. Geological Survey Coastal and Marine Geoscience Data System (CMGDS) at, http://cmgds.marine.usgs.gov/.

Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
The positional accuracy of the survey tracklines was determined by the accuracy of the boat-mounted Lowrance HDS5 receiver, while the accuracy of the resistivity data was determined by the recording device, a SuperSting R8/IP (registered trademark) produced by Advanced Geosciences, Inc., Austin, TX). The manufacturer’s tolerance for the SuperSting is better than 1% of readings, in most cases (lab measurements). Field measurement accuracy depends on ground noise and resistivity. The instrument will calculate and display a running estimate of measuring accuracy. Testing has shown that the positional accuracy for the Lowrance is ~1 m.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
This dataset contains the raw STG and GPS data files produced by the boat-mounted Lowrance and the Supersting (AGI) resistivity device.
Completeness_Report:
This dataset includes the locations of 17 tracks run on five latitudinal transects at the Eau Gallie North site on the western shore of the central section of Indian River Lagoon, FL.

Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
The horizontal accuracy of the sample locations was determined by the accuracy of the boat-mounted Lowrance HDS5 unit used to record the positional data of the boat during the data collection process. Testing has shown that the positional accuracy for the Lowrance is ~1 m.
Vertical_Positional_Accuracy:
Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
The only vertical measurements incorporated into the data files are the water depth measurements, measured by the boat-mounted Lowrance HDS5 transducer, with a resolution of 10 cm.

Process_Description:
A 100-m long CRP cable manufactured by Advanced Geosciences Inc. (AGI) of Austin, TX was towed behind a USGS barge, along five shore-parallel latitudinal transects located approximately 125, 200, 350, 500 and 750 m off the western edge of the central section of Indian River Lagoon, FL. The locations of seven pre-planned tracklines conducive to CRP profiling were determined prior to arrival at the study area; however, lines EA. and EG. were not run during either survey, due to water conditions. The remaining transects, EB.–EF., will be profiled repeatedly to discover temporal variability. The CRP cable consists of an array of electrodes, with two current (transmitting) electrodes and a number of potential (receiving) electrodes, producing a file (.stg) that records apparent resistivity between the matched pairs of current and potential electrodes. Spacing between the receiving electrodes is either 5 or 10 m, depending upon the connection ("pigtail") used to couple the cable to the recording device, the AGI Supersting R8/IP. Data consists of vertical profiles of electrical resistance extending from ~10-25 m below the seafloor, with the 10 m electrode spacing resulting in deeper penetration. Data were collected during two field trips: Lines IRL001-IRL006 were collected on 12/14/2016, lines EGN302-EGN305 on 01/25/2017 and lines EGN306-EGN313 on 01/26/2017.

Process_Description:
Water depth, water temperature and geographical coordinates were collected by a Lowrance boat-mounted GPS system that was temporally synchronized with the resistivity array, producing a National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) 0813 file (.gps). The GPS functions enabled were Recommended Minimum Navigation Information (RMC), Depth of Water (DPT), and Mean Temperature of Water (MTW).

Process_Description:
The raw .stg (apparent resistivity) and raw .gps (NMEA 0813) files were uploaded into the Marine Log Manger (registered trademark, AGI) module in the SuperSting R8/IP (registered trademark, AGI) software. The two data files were combined, linearized and clipped to remove extraneous (turns at the end of runs) sections. This resulted in geographical coordinates for all raw resistivity, water temperature and depth values, thereby, creating a spatial representation of the subsurface’s apparent resistivity along the track.

Process_Description:
EarthImager 2D, a two-dimensional inversion modeling software (registered trademark, AGI), was used to interpret this data. Because the apparent resistivity values do not account for differences in salinity and geology, EarthImager 2D combines all information to create a tri-panel figure for analytic purposes. The top panel displays raw resistivity data, the middle panel displays the model EarthImager 2D creates to best explain the raw data, while the bottom panel displays the modeled resistivity, accounting for salinity and geologic parameters.
