Description:
Abstract:
The data in this section of the release characterizes the nearshore bathymetry collected in October 2021 by USGS and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI) scientists using a self-righting electric uncrewed surface vehicle with a sidescan sonar attached. Data collection occured at the USGS DUring Nearshore Event eXperiment (DUNEX) site on Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge (PINWR). DUNEX is a multi-agency, academic, and non-governmental organization collaborative community experiment designed to study nearshore coastal processes during storm events. USGS participation in DUNEX will contribute new measurements and models that will increase our understanding of storm impacts to coastal environments, including hazards to humans and infrastructure and changes in landscape and natural habitats. Collected data are part of field activity 2021-029-FA and are related to donated data 2020-024-DD, field activity 2021-028-FA and 2021-032-FA.
Purpose:
These data products resolve ripples at their highest resolution and provide a detailed look at the bathymetry at the Pea Island DUNEX site.
Supplemental_Information:
For more information about the data, see https://cmgds.marine.usgs.gov/fan_info.php?fan=2020-024-DD and https://cmgds.marine.usgs.gov/fan_info.php?fan=2021-029-FA. Bounding coordinates represent the maximum bounds of the rasters provided in this dataset.

Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
All depth values are internally consistent in relation to each other and are comparable to values of published bathymetry in the area (e.g. 2022 USGS CoNED Topobathy DEM (1851 - 2020): Coastal Carolinas, available at https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/inport/item/67013, accessed May 18, 2022).
Logical_Consistency_Report:
These grids represent sidescan bathymetry data collected by Peter Traykovski (WHOI). Two products, the bathymetry and amplitude returns, are provided. The bathymetry is given as raw returns and as an interpolated raster between the stripes of data. The amplitude data are given in 50 cm and 10 cm resolutions.
Completeness_Report:
Erroneous returns were removed in processing using software and hand editing routines, see processing steps for more detail. Gaps in the raw sounding data are from the USV making transects too far apart.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Navigation information was acquired from the GNSS/IMU system in PPK mode and has a theoretical horizontal accuracy of 1 cm. The horizontal accuracy of the multibeam data was not verified, but in water depths of 15 meters or less, for 450 kHz transmit frequencies, reported multibeam accuracies are less than 1 meter and likely 30-50 centimeters (Ernsten and others, 2006).
Vertical_Positional_Accuracy:
Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Navigation information was acquired from the GNSS/IMU system in PPK mode and has a theoretical vertical accuracy of 1-cm and average reported vertical position error of 7.6 cm. The navigational accuracies do not represent the accuracy of the derived bathymetric soundings. The vertical accuracy of the multibeam data was not verified, but in water depths of 15 meters or less, for 450 kHz transmit frequencies, reported multibeam accuracies are less than 1-meter and likely 2-10 centimeters (Ernsten and others, 2006). Process_Description:
Data collected with a PingDSP 3DSS-DX-450 bathymetric sidescan sensor attached to a uncrewed surface vehicle (USV) NeedleNose. Position and velocity data (GNSS/IMU) of the USV collected using a Novatel Hexagon IMU-IGM-A1 and FlexPak6-DS2 system in the USV and corrected to a JAVAD-Triumph-2 base station. USV controlled by Peter Traykovski. 1. The GNSS and IMU data are post-processed in Novatel Inertial Explorer. The IMU to GNSS offset is xyz 0.00, 0.022, and 0.384 (in meters). 2. The raw binary files pulled from the sidescan are processed in the PingDSP 3DSS-DX-Control software using the multibeam bathymetry engine (http://www.pingdsp.com/techMBES) to produce XTF sonar files. Raw data was smoothed over 10 samples and removed points above 1.5 m and below 20 m in MBES Mode. Sonar data was also processed in Point Cloud Mode to provide a higher resolution amplitude dataset. 3. XTF files were imported into SonarWiz to merge data with the GNSS/IMU information using the navinjectorPro utility. Data were filtered using the software’s Manufacturer Flag Filter, Range Filter, Cutoff Angle Filter, and Dynamic and Static Box Filter to remove points outside of the normal range or from poor returns. 4. Bathymetric sonar data processed in MBES Mode was exported from SonarWiz using trimmed mean output with default settings at 50 cm in NAD83/UTM Zone 18N and NAVD88 meters, using Geoid 12B, as a 32-bit GeoTIFF. A secondary bathymetry product was created using regularizedata3d by Jamal (2020), a cubic interpolation with the optimum smoothness coefficient determined by a Monte Carlo optimization procedure for the data regularization. Regularizedata3d entailed removing one cross-shore line of data from the processing and adjusting the smoothness parameter so the overall surface fit best fits the removed data. The process was then repeated for all the lines of data. The optimized smoothing parameter was used with all the data for the final processing to create a smoothed and interpolated 50 cm bathymetry grid. 5. Amplitude sonar data from MBES Mode was gridded at 50 cm resolution and exported from SonarWiz using mean output and default settings as a 32-bit GeoTIFF. The amplitude sonar data processed in Point Cloud Mode was gridded at 10 cm and exported from SonarWiz using mean output and default settings as a 32-bit GeoTIFF.
