Ground control points at Head of the Meadow Beach, Truro on March 10, 2022
Abstract:
These data map the beach and nearshore environment at Head of the Meadow Beach in Truro, MA, providing updated regional context for the 2019 CoastCam installation. CoastCam CACO-01 are two video cameras aimed at the beach that view the coast shared by beachgoers, shorebirds, seals, and sharks. These data were collected as part of field activity 2022-015-FA and a collaboration with the National Park Service at Cape Cod National Seashore to monitor the region. In March 2022, U.S. Geological Survey and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI) scientists conducted field surveys to re-map the field of view of the CoastCam. Aerial images of the beach for use in structure from motion were taken with a camera (Sony a6000) and a post-processed kinematic (PPK) system attached to a helium filled balloon-kite (Helikite). High-precision GPS targets (AeroPoints) and numbered black and white tarps were used as ground control points. Bathymetry was collected in the nearshore using a single-beam echosounder mounted on a surf capable self-righting electric autonomous surface vehicle. Agisoft Metashape (v. 1.8.1) was used to create a digital surface model with the collected imagery, which was merged with the bathymetry in MATLAB (v. 2020b) to create a continuous topobathy product.

    Date: 10-Mar-2022 (process 1 of 1)
    The ground control points were processed with the following steps:
    1. Ten AeroPoints and eight plastic tarps were deployed evenly spaced across the survey area. AeroPoints were left on for ~2 hours to collect GNSS data and the numbered plastic tarps were surveyed at their center with the RTK rover connected to the base station.
    2. Once connected to Wifi, the AeroPoint data were uploaded and run through a post-processing kinematic algorithm. The data were exported with xyz variances in the horizontal datum NAD83(2011) to produce latitude, longitude, and ellipsoid heights, and then UTM19N and NAVD88 using GEOID 18 were used to produce orthometric heights. These were exported to a CSV file and combined with the RTK data of the plastic tarps and named 2022015FA_Truro_nav_GCPs.csv. Person who carried out this activity:

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

    Positions and elevations were produced with variance data by the Propeller Corrections Network (https://www.propelleraero.com/aeropoints-coverage-map/) for the AeroPoints or from the Spectra Precision (SP)80 Rover and Base station setup using Real-time Kinematic (RTK) positioning, which was QA/QC’d with known reference marks.
  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?
    AeroPoint targets have theoretical sub 1 cm horizontal absolute accuracy (see attributes for xy variance in millimeters). RTK positions have a 2 cm horizontal accuracy based on a comparison of measurements taken of known reference marks.
  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?
    AeroPoint targets have theoretical sub 1 cm vertical absolute accuracy (see attributes for z variance in millimeters). RTK positions have a 2 cm vertical accuracy.
  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?
    There were a total of 18 usable ground control points. AeroPoints were surveyed with the RTK equipment for QC and results were compared to the Propeller Network values; all values were within 2 cm, but the RTK values were less accurate so only the Propeller values were provided for the AeroPoints. Users are advised to read the rest of the metadata record carefully for additional details.

    The file contains USGS field activity 2022-015-FA navigation data: ground control points (AeroPoints) and plastic tarps deployed on March 10 for use in tandem with the aerial imagery.
