Description:
Abstract:
Geologic structure and isopach maps were constructed by interpreting over 19,890 trackline kilometers of co-located multichannel boomer, sparker and chirp seismic reflection profiles from the continental shelf of the Delmarva Peninsula, Maryland and Virginia. In this region, Brothers and others (2020) interpret 12 seismic units and 11 regional unconformities. They interpret the infilled channels as Late Tertiary and Quaternary courses of the Susquehanna, Potomac, Rappahannock, York and James Rivers and tributaries, in addition to a broad drainage system. These regional unconformities form a composite unconformity interpreted as the Quaternary-Tertiary (Q-T) unconformity. A depth to Tertiary (Uqt) and total Quaternary sediment thickness (Q) isopach are included with this data release. Other products in this data release include thickness of an early Pleistocene unit (Qbd), thickness of a Pleistocene highstand system tract (Q2), thickness of a post last glacial maximum (LGM) fluvial/estuarine unit (Qcch), thickness of Holocene to modern marine sediment (Qmn), depth to the base of the Persimmons Point and Ocean City paleochannels (U4), depth to the base of the Exmore and Belle Haven paleochannels (U6), depth to the base of the Eastville paleochannel and tributaries (U8), depth to the base (fluvial unconformity) of the Cape Charles paleochannel and tributary paleochannels (fluvial unconformity, U10) and the base (tidal ravinement) of associated Holocene tidal and back-barrier deposits (tidal ravinement surface, U10.5).
Purpose:
This dataset contains trackline navigation for approximately 944 km of EG&G Uniboom seismic-reflection data collected by the U.S. Geological Survey during field activities 1974-004-FA and 1975-003-FA offshore of the Delmarva Peninsula. This information shows the spatial distribution and spacing of single-channel, seismic-reflection data.

Logical_Consistency_Report:
A select portion of USGS seismic-reflection profiles from field activities 1974-004-FA and 1975-003-FA were used to interpret the subsurface geologic units. All seismic reflection data used in this data release were interpreted by Laura L. Brothers and David S. Foster. David S. Foster conducted the processing steps. Unless stated otherwise, all interpretations, two-way travel time conversions to depth, and horizon gridding were conducted in Kingdom Suite 2017 software.
Completeness_Report:
A select portion of USGS seismic-reflection profiles from field activities 1974-004-FA (Julian days 135, 136, 148, and 149) and 1975-003-FA (Julian days 132 to 135) were used to interpret the subsurface geologic units.

Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
The scanned TIFF images of Uniboom seismic-reflection profiles from USGS field activities 1974-004-FA and 1975-003-FA had a resolution of 300 dpi. The TIFF images were downsampled, before converting to SEG-Y format, to reflect a shot rate of 0.5 seconds. This resulted in one-pixel length in the X dimension per SEG-Y trace. Navigation was with Loran-C, which has an accuracy of 0.1 to 0.25 nautical miles. Navigation fix points were at 10-minute intervals for 1974-004-FA and 5 minute intervals for 1975-003-FA, or at a ship speed of 5 knots, 772 meter and 1543 meter intervals. The datum of WGS 1972 for geographic coordinate pairs were transformed to WGS 84.

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
The 1974-004-FA columns (fields) included Date, Time of Day, Latitude Degrees, Latitude Decimal Minutes, Longitude Degrees, and Longitude Decimal Minutes were manually entered into a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. New latitude and longitude fields for decimal degrees were calculated. The spreadsheet was saved as a CSV file.
The 1975-003-FA M77T format file was opened with Microsoft Excel and the fields Date, Time of Day, Latitude Decimal Degrees, and Longitude Decimal Degrees were saved to a spreadsheet in CSV format.
The following process steps in Excel were the same for 1974-004-FA and 1975-003-FA data:
1) A field named File was added to the spreadsheets. The field name File relates to the name of the SEG-Y files generated from the scanned TIFF images of the seismic data and is in the format YEAR_FIELD ACTIVITY NUMBER_START JULIAN DAY_START TIME OF DAY_END TIME OF DAY (e.g., 1974_004_135_1810_2210).
2) A field Shot was created and a shot number that starts at 1 for each file name was created based on the time of day and the known shot rate of 0.5 seconds for the seismic data (1 minute = 120 shots).
3) New CSV files were saved with the added fields File and Shot.
Process_Date: 2018
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
The CSV files from the previous step were used to create point shapefiles with ArcCatalog 10.7.1, Create Feature Class From XY Table. The coordinate system was identified as Geographic WGS 72.
The ArcGIS Tool, Project, was used to transform the shapefiles coordinate systems from Geographic WGS 72 to UTM Zone 18 North WGS 84 and saved as a point feature class.
XTools Pro, Add XYZ Coordinates added the UTM coordinate pairs.
XTools Pro, Table to File, created CSV files with UTM coordinate pairs, file name, and shot number. These navigation files were used to load SEG-Y files into Kingdom Suite and were also used in the next process step to interpret the data in Kingdom Suite.
Process_Date: 2018
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
1) The CSV files created in the previous step was added as a standalone table to an ArcGIS Pro 2.4.1 project map.
2) Point feature classes were created from these tables using the Geoprocessing Tool, XY Table To Point. The coordinate system was defined as WGS 84 UTM Zone 18 North.
3) Polyline feature classes were created from the point feature classes using the Geoprocessing Tool, Points To Line. The unique features used the attribute File in the Line Field and in the Sort Field.
4) The Geoprocessing Tool Feature Class To Shapefile created polyline shapefiles.
5) The shapefiles names were changed to USGS_1974-004-FA_tracklines.shp and USGS_1975-003-FA_tracklines.shp.
6) Both shapefiles were reprojected to a Geographic coordinates system to WGS 84 using the ArcMap 10.8.1 Project tool. No datum transformation was needed. Providing the data in a geographic coordinates system simplifies the integration of the dataset with other vector datasets.
These are the two shapefiles included with this data release: USGS_1974-004-FA_tracklines.shp and USGS_1975-003-FA_tracklines.shp.
