Abstract:
Twenty-four piston cores (and associated trigger cores) were collected from the source zone of the Currituck Landslide Complex and upper slope adjacent to Baltimore Canyon by the U.S. Geological Survey and the University of Rhode Island Department of Ocean Engineering during an eight-day cruise aboard the R/V Hugh R. Sharp in September/October of 2012. These cores were analyzed for evidence of seafloor mass transport processes, with an emphasis on constraining the age and shallow stratigraphy of the landslide complex. Sedimentological and geotechnical characterization of the cores was carried out through whole core imaging and description, followed by analysis of discrete samples at the USGS Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center's Sediment Analysis Laboratory and other facilities, including grain-size, CaCO3 content, mineral composition, and bulk index properties (e.g., undrained shear strength and water content), micropaleontologic separations, and geochronology. This data release contains the results of these core descriptions and results of the laboratory analyses.
Purpose:
The data provides a comprehensive understanding of the nature and properties of the sediments found in this geographic location. Undrained shear strength provides a relative measure of the sediments' ‘stiffness’ within the cores.

Cores were collected on the Hugh R. Sharp cruise HRS1209 from September 28, 2012 to October 4, 2012, and currently reside in the Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center's core repository. Torque measurement depths were checked to make sure that they matched the depths recorded in the data. Lower shear strength (0-9.4 oz in) sediment was measured with a manual torque gauge to an accuracy of 0.1 oz in (ounce-inch), and higher shear strength (6-25 oz in) sediment was measured with a digital torque gauge to an accuracy of 0.01 oz in. Shear strength measurements were later converted to kPa using equations described in Chaytor (2021), the associated publication.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Shear strength measurements are generally within the expected ranges. At some depths, the sediment was waterlogged and was sheared with a torque less than expected. These instances were noted on the visual core description sheets (see larger work citation).
Completeness_Report:
Of the 24 cores collected during the Hugh R. Sharp HRS1209 cruise, 19 cores were measured for shear strength. Cores chosen for analysis were thought to represent the full range of sediments expected to be encountered. Omitted cores were not included because the coring locations were near previously analyzed cores.

Shear strength was measured at the same time as the core visual description was completed. A 0.5-in (12.7-mm) diameter by 0.5-in (12.7-mm) high four-blade vane attached to a torque gauge was inserted into the sediment to a depth of 2 cm and rotated at a fixed rate until the sediment sheared. The torque gauge reading, measured in oz-in (ounce-inch) was recorded on the core description sheet.
