Abstract:
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) conducted a geophysical and sampling survey in October 2014 that focused on a series of shoreface-attached ridges offshore of western Fire Island, NY. Seismic-reflection data, surficial grab samples and bottom photographs and video were collected along the lower shoreface and inner continental shelf. The purpose of this survey was to assess the impact of Hurricane Sandy on this coastal region. These data were compared to seismic-reflection and surficial sediment data collected by the USGS in the same area in 2011 to evaluate any post-storm changes in seabed morphology and modern sediment thickness on the inner continental shelf.     The Excel spreadsheet contains the following columns: JD (Julian Day), Time UTC, PDS2000 (multibeam acquisition software - test mode only), 512 (sgy) (seismic-reflection acquisition), seaboss (sample acquisition system),HYPACK (*.JD) (navigation acquistion), SVP (sound velocity profile acquisition - test mode only, no usable data collected), Comments. Within the spreadsheet, rows 2 - 10 describe the acquisition equipment. The definitions of the columns of data are as follows: JD: Julian Day Time UTC: Time in Coordinated Universal Time PDS2000: Acquisition system for the multibeam echosounder that was tested during the cruise. No usable data were collected. 512 (*.sgy): Seismic-reflection acquisition system - EdgeTech SB-512i sub-bottom system. SeaBoss: Sample information for the SeaBOSS sampler. Sediment samples, bottom photographs and video data were collected. SVP: sound velocity profier used to acquire sound velocity within the water column. These data are generally used in conjunction with the multibeam echosounder to define the velocity structure of the water column and reduce refraction artifacts in the multibeam data. The multibeam echosounder did not collect usable data. The SVP data were thuse not used. Comments: Additional comments about data acquistion for all systems on the USGS Field Activity 2014-009-FA.

To provide the data acquisition logs in Excel spreadsheet format. This logbook is invaluable in sorting out issues and problems related to data acquisition. The log book contains information about navigation, seismic acquisitiontion and sample collection.

    The logbook was maintained by the technical and scientific staff during data acquisition. The excel spreadsheet contains information about navigation systems, seismic-reflection systems (EdgeTech 512i), seafloor sediment sampling, and the test of a new multibeam sonar (no useable data were acquired with the system.
