Description:
Abstract:
Hurricane Sandy, the largest storm of historical record in the Atlantic basin, severely impacted southern Long Island, New York in October 2012. In 2014, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), conducted a high-resolution multibeam echosounder survey with Alpine Ocean Seismic Survey, Inc., offshore of Fire Island and western Long Island, New York to document the post-storm conditions of the inner continental shelf. The objectives of the survey were to determine the impact of Hurricane Sandy on the inner continental shelf morphology and modern sediment distribution, and provide additional geospatial data for sediment transport studies and coastal change model development. For more information about the WHCMSC Field Activity, see https://cmgds.marine.usgs.gov/fan_info.php?fan=2014-072-FA.
Purpose:
This bathymetric grid represents approximately 1170 kilometers of bathymetric data collected in 2014. These data were collected using a dual-head R2Sonic 2024 multibeam echosounder (MBES) by Alpine Ocean Seismic Survey, Inc., during USGS field activity 2014-072-FA. These bathymetric data were used to determine the impact of Hurricane Sandy on the inner continental shelf morphology and sediment distribution.

Navigation and attitude (heave, pitch, roll and yaw) were acquired with an Applanix PosMV 320 Motion Reference Unit (MRU) using Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS), which is accurate to + or - 1 to 2 meters, horizontally. The configuration of the primary and secondary GPS antennas used for positioning and attitude aboard the R/V Shearwater are outlined in '1716Offset_Form.pdf', stored in https://cmgds.marine.usgs.gov/data/field-activity-data/2014-072-FA/data/logs/2014-072-FA_Alpine_logs.zip.
Vertical_Positional_Accuracy:
Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Vertical accuracy of the raw data based on system specifications may approximate 1% of water depth, approximately 0.1 to 0.3 meters within the survey area. The Applanix PosMV 320 MRU used to correct ship motion (heave, pitch, roll and yaw) has a theoretical vertical accuracy of a few mm. Real Time Kinematic (RTK) GPS height corrections were post processed and used to reference soundings to the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88) and remove water depth variations caused by tides. Refraction artifacts were minimized by acquiring sound velocity profiles throughout the survey area using an AML Minos-X SVP. The specific details of the survey operation and system preparation and calibration are listed in: 1714_USGS_SOP.pdf stored in https://cmgds.marine.usgs.gov/data/field-activity-data/2014-072-FA/data/logs/2014-072-FA_Alpine_logs.zip. A summary of the operation and systems used is given below. The multibeam echosounder (MBES) survey was conducted aboard the R/V Shearwater, a 110 aluminum tri-maran research vessel owned and operated by Alpine Ocean Seismic Survey, Inc. The R2Sonic 2024 dual-head MBES was mounted in the port side moon pool. The Applanix PosMV 320 MRU was mounted on the top moon pool plate and was used for positioning and attitude. Two GPS antennas were installed on a custom designed support system on the second deck. An AML Minos-X SVP was used to acquire sound velocity profiles during survey operations and a Valeport mini SVS was used to acquire speed of sound measurements at the R2Sonic 2024 transducer face. Survey lines were spaced at 100-m in order to image 100% of the seafloor within the survey areas. The survey areas were focused offshore of Fire Island, and offshore of the Rockaways and Long Beach, NY. (The survey areas were: 1) Rockaways and Long Beach (NYB = NY Block); 2) Fire Island to Watch Hill up to 5 km offshore (FI = Fire Island) , Watch Hill to Moriches Inlet, up to 8 km offshore (OWH = Optional Watch Hill) and Fire Island to Watch Inlet, extended from 5 km to 8 km offshore (OFI = Optional Fire Island). All survey areas were completely mapped during 2014-072-FA).

Process_Description:
Alpine Ocean Seismic Survey, Inc. processing routines and flow are described in detailed in 1714MBEProcessing_HOWTO.docx, stored in https://cmgds.marine.usgs.gov/data/field-activity-data/2014-072-FA/data/logs/2014-072-FA_Alpine_logs.zip. An overview is presented below: R2Sonic 2024 Multibeam Echosounder (MBES) data were acquired using QPS (Quality Positioning Services) QINSy (Quality Integrated Navigation System; version 8.10.2013.10.10.1) hydrographic data acquisition software. Raw XTF multibeam echo sounder data, attribute and navigation data were imported in CARIS 8.1.4 for data processing. GPS Tides (RTK navigation) was computed within CARIS 8.1.4. Sound velocity profiles were used to account for changes in the speed of sound within the water column during the survey. The multibeam echosounder data were then cleaned using the swath and subset editors to remove spurious points. Refraction artifacts were present in the data and were resolved using the Refraction Editor within CARIS. Additional filters were applied to the data to eliminate noise in the outer beams. A final 5 meter bathymetric grid was computed. An interpolation matrix (5 x 5 and neighbors of 6) was used to fill small gaps in the bathymetric grid. The final grid was exported to an xyz ASCII file using Base Surface to ASCII. The ASCII file was then imported to ArcGIS (version unspecified) using the ASCII to Feature Class tool, converted to a raster using the Point to Raster Tool, and then converted back to an ASCII Raster using the Raster to ASCII Tool.
