Title:
Bathymetric Terrain Model of the U.S. Atlantic Margin (100-meter resolution) compiled by the U.S. Geological Survey (32-bit GeoTIFF, MERCATOR Projection, WGS 84)
Abstract:
Bathymetric terrain models of seafloor morphology are an important component of marine geological investigations. Advances in acquisition and processing technologies of bathymetric data have facilitated the creation of high-resolution bathymetric surfaces that approach the resolution of similar surfaces available for onshore investigations. These bathymetric terrain models provide a detailed representation of the Earth's subaqueous surface and, when combined with other geophysical and geological datasets, allow for interpretation of modern and ancient geological processes.

Why was the data set created?

The purpose of this bathymetric terrain model is to provide a high-quality bathymetric surface of the Atlantic margin of the United States for current and future geological investigations.

How was the data set created?

  1. From what previous works were the data drawn?
  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?
    Date: 03-Dec-2012 (process 1 of 16)
Step 1. This step is the same for all surveys included in this grid except as noted for RB0904, NF-11-04-NC, MGL1512, NF1208_USGS, H12490, and H12491. Downloaded the raw data files from the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) for each survey listed below. Line files are archived in the geographic coordinate system and loaded into CARIS HIPS (v. 7.1-9.0, Software was updated as new versions were available over the course of this project). All surfaces created in HIPS used a 100 meter grid cell resolution and the Mercator projection with a central longitude of 72.0 degrees West, and a latitude of true scale of 45.0 degrees North that is more suitable for the spatial extent of this project than the geographic coordinate system.
    Where:
    Survey=Cruise Name
Source=the address of the National Centers for Environmental Information archive location where raw data were downloaded.
Download Date=The calendar date the raw data were downloaded.
Download Format= the version of MB-System format of the data downloaded.
Output Surface= The name of the final CARIS surface (in .csar format) that was used in the combine function.
Surface Creation Date= the calendar date the latest surface was created for input to the combine function.

If any edits were made to a surface, it is rebuilt, interpolated, and a new creation data is recorded. Format = YYYYMMDD Surveys in Version 1 (ambath100) that are included in Version 2 (AMBath100m_V2.tiff). These data are included in "AtlanticMarginOFRBath100m5Feb13.csar" described in processing step 7 below.

VERSION EXPLANATION: The follwing surveys are included in Version 1 of this grid, but were superceded with newer, higher resolution dat in Version 2: B00218, B00219, B00220, B00308, B00309. The Surveys listed below were included in Version 1 and are also included in Version 2. Some of the surveys were updated for version 2 to either include additional lines from the same survey, that are now with in the larger extent covered by version 2, or further edited to improve data quality. An explantion of updated surfaces are included with each updated entry below.

Step 2. Combine the surveys from Ronald H. Brown, Pathfinder, and Roger Revelle into one surface using the "Start date is least" criteria using CARIS Base Editor (v. 4.1.14).The "Start date is least" criteria puts the surface with the oldest date of data collection on the bottom and newest data on top during the combine function. The combine criteria dictates the cell value that remains when two or more cells from different surfaces overlap. Person who carried out this activity:

Step 5: Combined Okeanos surveys with Hassler data using "creation date is greatest" criteria for the combine operation using CARIS Base Editor (ver. 4.0.2) The "Creation date is greatest" criteria puts the surface with the oldest date of data creation on the bottom and newest data on top during the combine function. Data sources used in this process:
    • OkeanosCombV2CDIG.csar
    • H12490_16m.bag
    • H12491_16m.bag
Data sources produced in this process:
    • OECombFH100mV2.scar
    Date: 12-Sep-2015 (process 6 of 16)
Step 6. Added MGL15 to RBPFKN_MercCombv2.csar Data sources used in this process:
    • RBPFKN_MerComb100mV2.csar
    • MGL1512_Merc100mInterp2.csar
Data sources produced in this process:
    • RBPFKN_HenPFCombMGL.csar
    Date: 12-Nov-2015 (process 7 of 16)
Step 7. Combine 3 surfaces. This step combines the new larger surveys in version 2, with the csar surface that was published in version 1 (AtlanticMarginOFRBath100m5Feb13.csar). Used the "Creation Date is Greatest" criteria during the combine function so that the new surveys for version 2 replaced data in version 1 that overlapped. Data sources used in this process:
    • RBPFKN_HenPFCombMGL.csar
    • OECombFH100mV2.scar
    • AtlanticMarginOFRBath100m5Feb13.csar
Data sources produced in this process:
    • AtlanticMarginCombV2
    Date: 12-Nov-2015 (process 8 of 16)
Step 8. Combine transit lines from several surveys in the area of Cape Fear to fill in small data gaps. EX1106.csar was updated from version 1 to version 2 to include portions of transit lines. Data sources used in this process:
    • EX1106.csar
    • EX1201_BlakeV2.csar
    • EX1403_100m.csar
    • EX1205_L1_V2.csar
Data sources produced in this process:
    • CapeFearV2.csar
    Date: 12-Nov-2015 (process 9 of 16)
Step 9. Combine CapeFearV2.csar with larger surface to produce final extent. Data sources used in this process:
    • CapeFearV2.csar
    • AtlanticMarginCombV2.csar
Data sources produced in this process:
    • AtlanticMarginCombPF02_CFV2.csar
    Date: 05-Jan-2016 (process 10 of 16)
Step 10. Fill in several no data gaps by extracting data and converting to a TIN. Using CARIS Base Editor (v. 4.1.14) Use the "Extract by Digitizing" feature from the tools menu to manually digitize polygons encompassing areas of no data. Using the "Create TIN" feature from the "Tools" menu, convert extracted suface (with holes), to a TIN (without holes). Finally convert the TIN (GapFillsTIN) to a surface (GapFills100mV2.csar) using the "Interpolate surface from TIN" context menu. The Natural Neighbors mehods was used to convert the TIN to a 100-m resolution csar surface. Data sources used in this process:
    • AtlanticMarginCombPF02_CFV2.csar
    • GapFillsExtract.csar
Data sources produced in this process:
    • GapFillsTIN
    • GapFills100mV2.csar
    Date: 05-Jan-2016 (process 11 of 16)
Step 11. Export surfaces from Base Editor as GeoTIFFs for merging in ArcMap. Using the "Export to Raster Product" from the file menu in Base Editor, export GapFills100mV2.csar and AtlanticMarginCombPF02_CFV2.csar to GeoTIFFs. Data sources used in this process:
    • AtlanticMarginCombPF02_CFV2.csar
    • GapFills100mV2.csar
    • AtlanticMarginCombPF02_CFV2.csar
Data sources produced in this process:
    • AtlanticMargin_V2.tiff
    • GapFills100mV2.tiff
    Date: 05-Jan-2016 (process 12 of 16)
Step 12. Merge gap fill surface into main surface (AtlanticMarginV2.tiff) in ArcMap using the "Mosaic" tool in ArcMap (v. 10.3.1). During the merge process, the "first" option was used for the "Mosaic Operator" so that the Main surface was on top, and the Gap Fills only filled areas of no data in main surface. Data sources used in this process:
    • AtlanticMargin_V2.tiff
    • GapFills100mV2.tiff
Data sources produced in this process:
    • AtlanticMargin_V2.tiff
    Date: 05-Jan-2016 (process 13 of 16)
Step 13. Fill in any remaining small holes using Raster Calculator and a 5x5 cell mean value filter ArcMap (v. 10.3.1) The original grid (AtlanticMargin_V2.tif) was converted to an 8-bit ArcRaster grid (BathMask) to use as a mask feature to constrain the mean filter. After filtering, the "shrink" tool was used to clip the filtered grid (ambathfilt5x5), back to the original boundary using "number of zones= 4" option. Data sources used in this process:
    • ambathfilt5x5.tif
Data sources produced in this process:

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?
No formal attribute accuracy tests were conducted.
  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?
The horizontal accuracy of line files accessed from the Natioanal Centers for Environmental Information are not published with the line files. Most surveys were collected after 2004 used Differential Global Positioning System for navigation. Earlier surveys (B00213, B00214,B00215, B00221, and B00310) were collected using Starfix GPS. Horizontal accuracy for HEN04-1, HEN04-2, HEN04-3, PF0501, PF0502, KNOX17RR, and RB1202 are "Positioning is accurate to better than 5 meters (at 95% confidence)" as stated http://ccom.unh.edu/sites/default/files/metadata/Atlantic_ESRI_DTM_metadata.xml
  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?
All bathymetric files were collected using Instantaneous Sea Level (except H12490 and H12491) and no additional tidal corrections were applied during import to CARIS HIPS (ver 7.1-9.02). Instantaneous sea level indicates that the data collected were not referenced to a tidal datum, rather that the depths represent a height that is dependent on the local sea level at that location and time. Vertical accuracy for HEN04-1, HEN04-2, HEN04-3, PF0501, PF0502, KNOX17RR, and RB1202 are "Depth errors (at the 95% confidence level) are smaller than 1% of the observed water depth as determined by crosslines" as stated http://ccom.unh.edu/sites/default/files/metadata/Atlantic_ESRI_DTM_metadata.xml
  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?
This grid is a compilation of bathymetric data collected during 33 separate surveys conducted between 1990 and 2015. Data were collected using different vessels and sonars, however, they were processed and edited using the same methods detailed below. Data from these surveys collected outside the area of interest (transit lines etc.) may not be included in this grid. Small data gaps within each grid were interpolated (if needed) and then exported as a GeoTIFF. Small differences between data coverage in the GeoTIFF and the corresponding Source shapefile (AtlanticMarginBathSource_V2) may exist
  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?
No formal logical accuracy tests were conducted.

How can someone get a copy of the data set?

Are there legal restrictions on access or use of the data?
