Affiliate Investigator(s): Sarah Fowell, U. Alaska Fairbanks; Chris Maio, U. Alaska; Nancy Bigelow, U. Alaska Fairbanks, Matt Wooler, U. Alaska, Fairbanks

Information Specialist(s): Jenna Hill

Data Type(s): Seismics: Sub Bottom Profiler, Sampling: Geology

Scientific Purpose/Goals: We plan to collect and analyze sediment cores from five submarine sedimentary basins on the Bering Sea shelf which may have been occupied by freshwater lakes during the last glacial maximum. Our objectives include reconstructing the vegetation of the emergent Bering Land Bridge and evaluating the relationship between sea ice extent during the Pleistocene and Holocene.

Vehicle(s):

Start Port/Location: Nome, AK

End Port/Location: Dutch Harbor, AK

Start Date: 2023-08-05

End Date: 2023-09-04

Equipment Used: Kongsberg Topas, Gravity Core, multicore, pistoncore, Vibracore

Information to be Derived: Our team will analyze the cores using methods from diatom micropaleontology, palynology, organic geochemistry, sedimentology, and ancient DNA.
