Other ID: none

Status: Completed

Organization(s): USGS, St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center

Funding Program(s): Guidance of Reef Restoration Action for Shoreline Protection - GRRASP (GX.26.MN00.UXB01.00)

Principal Investigator(s): Ilsa Kuffner

Affiliate Investigator(s):

Information Specialist(s): Anastasios Stathakopoulos, Ilsa Kuffner

Data Type(s): Sampling: Biology, Location-Elevation: Navigation, Imagery: Photo, Environmental Data: Temperature, Environmental Data: Dissolved Oxygen, Environmental Data: CTD, Biological Field Study: Experiments (biological), Environmental Data: Wave

Scientific Purpose/Goals: Site visit to coral calcification monitoring stations to measure coral and algal calcification rates as well as collect CTD, dissolved O2, wave sensor data and temperature data.

Vehicle(s): Ford F-350 Dually Grey (GSA)

Start Port/Location: St. Petersburg, FL

End Port/Location: St. Petersburg, FL

Start Date: 2024-05-08

End Date: 2024-05-24

Equipment Used: Global Positioning System (GPS), Digital Camera, HOBO Water Temperature Pro V2 Data Logger, Sea-Bird CT Logger (SBE 37 MicroCAT), Conductivity, Temperature, and Depth (CTD) Probe, Crustose Coralline Algae (CCA) Tiles, Ohaus Balance, Other

Information to be Derived: Mass of calcium carbonate gained per unit time for coral Acropora palmata and crustose coralline algal communities on pvc tiles. Hourly temperature data for past 6 months. Conductivity, temperature and depth. dissolved oxygen. Wave sensor data.

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: Site visit to coral calcification monitoring stations to assess coral health status, collect DO, wave sensor, and temperature sensor data, and recover algae tile samples. Calcification rate data were not collected because all experimental corals died from 2023 bleaching. Photographic imagery documenting coral mortality, including all Acropora palmata and A. cervicornis, was also collected. Completed.
