Vehicle(s):

Start Port/Location: Coos Bay, OR

End Port/Location: Coos Bay, OR

Start Date: 1994-08-27

End Date: 1994-09-06

Equipment Used: underwatercamera, underwatertelevision, core, bathymetry, submersible, grab sampler, navigation

Information to be Derived:

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: 67 hours of video tape, 1000 still photographs, Sea Beam bathymetry, 57 rock samples, 10 sediment cores

Staff: Bob Bohannon, Ledabeth Pickthorn, Jane Reid, Ginny Smith

Affiliate Staff:
Tuomo Tormanen - Visiting Scientist

Notes: (From Sept. 9, 1994 USGS bulletin) Randy Koski reports that during the first three days of their cruise aboard the LANEY CHOUEST (with Bohannon, Gray, Reid, Ross, Smith, and Tormanen) deployments of the U.S. Navys advanced tethered vehicle (ATV) and submersible DSV TURTLE have yielded 45 hours of videotape and about 25 rock samples from the south flank and crest of Blanco Ridge. Accumulations of volcanic rock fragments and evidence for rock avalanches on the Ridge flanks are consistent with the record of seismicity along this transform fault zone. This collaborative program with NOAA and the NAVY will continue through September 7, with final operations in the east Blanco Depression.
