Time-series data
Data for each instrument at the basic sampling interval are included on this
DVD-ROM in netCDF format. Some data have also been hourly averaged; files containing hourly averaged data
are indicated with '-a1h' in the file name. The data are in EPIC netCDF format defined by the
NOAA Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory
(PMEL). NetCDF is a general, self-documenting,
machine-transportable data format created and supported by UCAR
(http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/packages/netcdf/).
EPIC (http://www.pmel.noaa.gov/epic/) is a set of
standards which allow researchers from different organizations to share oceanographic data without
having to translate "foreign" data types into the local vernacular. See
http://woodshole.er.usgs.gov/staffpages/cdenham/public_html/
for tools to read these data files into MatLab software.

*To correct apparent compass errors in the FSI
current meters, the data were rotated so that the orientation of the principle axis matched the principle axis
orientation computed from the ADCP data at 20
m during non-internal wave periods.
FSI 1467, 1468 and 1469 were rotated -37, -8 and 35 degrees,
respectively. Both original (fsi1467.epic, fsi1468.epic, and fsi1469.epic) and rotated versions
(fsi1467-a.nc, fsi1468-a.nc, and fsi1469-a.nc) are included.

Hydrographic Data
Three hydrographic cruises were conducted during the moored array experiment to map the temperature, salinity, and suspended-sediment fields across Massachusetts Bay. Sections of temperature and salinity were made along a transect through the MBIWE moorings on August 6 and August 20, 1998 on the FV Christopher Andrew, and sections of temperature, salinity and light transmission were made between August 31 and September 2, 1998, during mooring recovery, on the RV Argo Maine. Each cast was taken at one of fourteen stations that formed a transect across Massachusetts Bay; the target locations of these stations are included in an excel file. An ASCII header file (.hdr) containing all processing information, an ASCII file of the data averaged in 1 m bins (.asc), and the original data files (.dat) are included for each station. The zip file contains the configuration files used to process the hydrographic data using SeaBird SeaSoft software.
