Cruise Objectives:
  1. Define geology and shallow structure of central Long Island Sound
  2. Determine geologic framework and
  3. Quaternary development of study area
Identify and map potential geologic hazards
Scientific Party (USGS): Robert Oldale, geologist (May 26)
Stewart Richards, GFA (May 27 - June 2)
Jack Connell - ET
Scientific Party (affiliate): Ralph Lewis-CT DEP, geologist, Chief Scientist
Scientific Equipment:
  • EG&G Uniboom seismic profiling system
  • EDO Western sidescan sonar system
  • Northstar LORAN-C navigation system
  • Texas Instrument Silent 700 system to record navigation
  • Analog tape recorder to record Uniboom seismics.
Navigation techniques used: Loran-C
Cruise Funding Source:
Project Title: New England Coastal Geology
Contract:
Remarks: Uniboom data were very good (excellent penetration and good resolution) except in areas where the acoustic signal was attenuated by gas in the sediments. Sidescan sonar records were satisfactory.
