Field Activity 2016-042-FA

Identifier 2016-042-FA
Purpose Participate in greenhouse gas intercalibration study
Location Baltic Sea
Summary John Pohlman and Michael Casso (USGS) participated in an intercalibration research cruise in the Baltic Sea, to measure dissolved methane and carbon dioxide concentration and their del 13C values in seawater. Our 2-person scientific party worked alongside other international researchers from October 16 to October 21, 2016, aboard the research vessel Elisabeth Mann Borgese (Leibniz-Institüt fur Ostseeforschung Warnemünde, Rostock, Germany). The vessel visited 11 stations in the Baltic Sea where water samples were collected, for analysis by the various research groups. We analyzed 98 discrete water samples for methane and carbon dioxide, using cavity ring-down spectrometers (CRDS). Additionally x km of track line of continuous surface water measurements were made while the ship was underway.
