Probabilistic Forecasting of Earthquakes and Earthquake Effects

Dates 2011-10-01 to 2018-09-30
Description Ensuring that hazard mitigation and planning efforts are based on scientifically sound assessments of the likelihood of loss of life, infrastructure, and property on U.S. and territorial coastlines resulting from catastrophic marine and coastal geologic events. This is a year-4 proposal for the Probabilistic hazards project. Years 1-3 generated a significant number of products (see 'products' sections throughout, where we've reserved the 'report' category for published research papers), and eight new data-acquisition cruises that gathered multibeam and seismic reflection data in key areas. Project activities have had demonstrable impact; offshore fault characterizations changed the active faults database at USGS and California Geological Survey (CGS) and fed directly into the National Seismic Hazard Maps and Working Group on California Earthquake Probabilities reports that were releas
