Title:
Conductivity, temperature and salinity time-series data collected in 2009 in the vicinity of Wainwright, Alaska
Abstract:
Measurements of conductivity and temperature were collected with a high-accuracy conductivity and temperature recorder (Seabird SBE37 microcat) in approximately 10 m water depth at a single location fronting the village of Wainwright, Alaska, from 24 August to 1 October 2009. The instrument was mounted on the frame approximately 0.50 m off the bottom of the seafloor. Salinity was calculated from conductivity measurements.

Why was the data set created?

Data were obtained to provide baseline information and to support the development of numerical models for assessing past and future coastal hazards. These data are intended for policy makers, resource managers, science researchers, students, and the general public. These data are not intended to be used for navigation.

How was the data set created?

  1. From what previous works were the data drawn?
  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?
    Date: 02-Oct-2009 (process 1 of 1)
Time series of conductivity and temperature were collected at approximately 10 m water depth using a Seabird SBE37 microcat, sampling every 2 minutes. Post-survey calculations of salinity were computed from the conductivity measurements using methods of PSS78 UNESCO, 1981.
  3. What similar or related data should the user be aware of?
Unesco, 1981, Background papers and supporting data on the International Equation of State 1980.

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?
Conductivity was calibrated by holding the sensor in bottles with solutions of known salinity concentrations and values adjusted on the instrument accordingly. No calibration or formal accuracy tests were performed on the temperature and pressure sensors.
  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?
A formal accuracy assessment of the horizontal positional information in the dataset has not been conducted. Marine point locations were measured with a hand-held, WAAS enabled Garmin 76CSx GPS unit. Horizontal accuracy is estimated to be 5 meters.
  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?
  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?
Dataset is considered complete for the information presented, as described in the abstract.
  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?
All data fall within expected ranges. Missing data have been filled with -9999 values.
