Title:
Time-series oceanographic data from the Monterey Canyon, CA October 2015 - March 2017
Abstract:
Time-series data of water depth, velocity, turbidity, and temperature were acquired between 5 October 2015 and 21 March 2017 within the Monterey Canyon off of Monterey, CA, USA. In order to better understand the triggering, progression and evolution of turbidity currents in Monterey Submarine Canyon, an experiment was designed to directly measure velocity, suspended sediment and physical water properties (temperature, salinity and density) along the canyon axis during an 18-month period. Three moorings in the upper canyon (MS1, MS2, MS3) containing oceanographic instruments and Anderson- type sediment traps were deployed during three consecutive six-month periods (A: October 2015 - April 2016; B: April - October 2016; C: October 2016 - March 2017). In addition, a bottom platform to the South of the canyon head (MS0) housed instrumentation to measure currents and waves on the adjacent shelf. The mooring diagram image files are a generalized representation of the deployed instrumentation at each site, and are included as a visual aid for understanding the sampling environment. A text file of the specific sensors listing parameters measured is also included.

    Date: 05-Oct-2015 (process 1 of 9)
    Oceanographic instruments were deployed in the Monterey Canyon to collect time-series data. Instruments included in deployment are: RDI Workhorse Monitor Wave and Current Gauge, Seabird SBE-37 Microcat Temperature and Salinity Logger, and additional instrumentation as listed in the CCE15_Mooring_Sensor_List.csv.

    Mooring MS1 was recovered by local fishermen after the mooring line parted. The data from the retrieved instruments were post-processed and sequentially added to this data release.

    Files are named with a convention that uses a 12 to 14-digit alpha-numeric code. The first six characters for this dataset are all 'CCE15M' for the experiment Combined Canyon Experiment, the 2-digit calendar year at the start of the experiment (15, 2015) and 'M' to designate that the instrument was on a mooring in the water column. The seventh character is a numeric code for the site (0, 1, 2, or 3) in which an increasing number indicates increasing water depth. The eighth character (A-C) designates the deployment time period. The ninth and tenth characters represent the instrument position on the platform, where 01 is the top-most. Next is a two to four-character code for data type: wh and aqd refer respectively to RDInstruments and Nortek acoustic doppler current profilers; alt, altimeter. Suffixes are additive indicating the logger recorded c, conductivity; t, temperature; d, depth; p, pressure; and tu, turbidity. Files of wave statistics from RDI ADCPs have the suffix 'wvs-p'.

NetCDF files are grouped into four (4) different zip files, one zip file per instrument mooring. The zip file names consist of a 7-digit alpha-numeric code, where the first 5 digits (CCE15) indicate the experiment designation and year of the initial deployment (Combined Canyon Experiment, 2015), and the last 2 digits indicate which of the 4 moorings the instruments were mounted (M0-M3).
