Abstract:
This portion of the data release presents linescan images (photographs) from push cores collected from Loki's Castle and Favne vent fields, on the Mohns Ridge, in the Norwegian Sea. These data were Rcollected in 2018 and 2019 (USGS Field Activity 2018-691-DD and 2019-624-FA). Images were obtained from seventeen push cores at 50-micron (200 pixel per cm) resolution. Color images in 16-bit TIFF format are provided for each core segment, along with proprietary metadata files containing image scaling information.
Purpose:
Images were obtained to characterize sediments in push cores. These data are intended for science researchers, students, policy makers, and the general public.

The locations of samples were determined using the ROV's Ultra Short Baseline Positioning System (USBL) navigation. Accuracy for this depth is approximately 20-50 m.

Samples are push cores and were pushed into sediment by the ROV’s manipulator arm. Once recovered shipboard cores were frozen (2018-691-DD) or refrigerated (2019-624-FA) until return to shore. Samples were donated from Field Activity 2018-691-DD, and no USGS attendees were present. Amy Gartman attended 2019-624-FA.

Cores split into "working" and "archive" halves in the lab. Sediment surfaces were cleaned and smoothed on the "archive" halves of split cores. Cores were loaded onto the track of a Geotek Multi Sensor Core Logger (MSCL) equipped with a Geotek Geoscan-III linescan camera and Geotek Imaging 3.7 software. Prior to imaging, the camera was calibrated to a white tile and an 18% grey calibration card.
