Abstract:
This data release contains geochemical data of sediment subsamples collected in 2018 and 2019 from Loki’s Ridge and Favne Vent Fields, Mohns Ridge, part of the Arctic Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Data include major, minor and trace element concentrations, location information (latitude, longitude, depth), analytical methods, and instrument detection limits where available.
Purpose:
These data serve to expand the knowledge and statistics for deep ocean marine mineral occurrences and composition within the global ocean.

Funding for this research is acknowledged from the U.S. Geological Survey Coastal and Marine Hazards and Resources Program, through the U.S. Geological Survey Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center. Sediment subsamples were collected aboard the Institute of Marine Research’s (IMR; Bergen, Norway) R/V G.O. Sars during IMR cruises GS18-218 (2018) and GS19-108 (2019). All geochemistry data were calibrated against certified reference materials. The instruments and techniques used to generate the geochemical data are included in the data table. Limits for each analyte's detection by an instrument are reported in the table. The value -8888 indicates that the measurement for an analyte was below the detection limit. Values of -9999 for concentration attributes indicate that no analysis was performed. Values of NaN and -9999 for method and detection limit attributes respectively indicate that no information was available. For this dataset, the CRM used include OREAS 70b, 134a, 520, 523, 524, 601, 621, 623, 751 and 753, NIST8607, GS314-2, and MP-2a. Accuracy is better than 5 % for Fe, Mn, Si, Al Mg, Ca, Na, K, S, As, Ba, Be, Bi, Cd, Co, Cu, Ga, Hf, Hg, In, Rb, Se, Sr, Ta, Te, Tl, U, W, Zr, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, and Sm; between 5 and 15 % for Ti, P, Ag, Cs, Ge, Li, Mo, Pb, Sb, Sc, Sn, Th, Zn, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Y, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu; and higher for Cr (34 %), Nb (28 %), and V (32 %). Samples are push cores and were pushed into sediment by the ROV’s manipulator arm. Once recovered shipboard cores were frozen (2018-691-DD) or refrigerated (2019-624-FA) until return to shore. Samples were donated from Field Activity 2018-691-DD, and no USGS attendees were present. Amy Gartman attended 2019-624-FA.
