Abstract:
Time series data of water surface elevation, wave height, water column currents and temperature, and suspended sediment were acquired for 6 weeks on a coral reef off Jurabi Point, Ningaloo Coast UNESCO World Heritage site in Western Australia in support of a study on the circulation and sediment transport patterns of these reefs.
Purpose:
The continuous measurements of waves, currents, tides, and water-column properties (temperature and suspended sediment) from these instrument deployments provide invaluable detailed data on circulation, wave transformation and the transport of sediment in a pristine coral reef environment. These data will be used to determine the processes responsible for the transport of reef-derived carbonate sediment towards the shore, and estimate the volume of this carbonate sediment flux; predictions can then be made on how this flux will change with rising sea levels.

Raw data from each instrument were exported to ASCII text files using the manufacturers software (Nortek Vector 1.39.09 for Nortek Vector;) on an Apple Macintosh Personal Computer running OS10.11.6. Exported data were QA/QC’d and exported to netCDF in Matlab R2017a.

Data were accumulated into NetCDF files. During post-processing, data collected when instruments were out of the water, and data degraded by biological fouling, were removed from the time series. Bad data points were identified by 1) the deployment and recovery times, 2) pressure readings equal to or less than 3 cm of water, 3) amplitude or correlation values outside of predetermined quality thresholds for the velocimeter. Files are named with a convention that uses a 13-digit alpha-numeric code. The first three characters for this dataset are all 'NIN' for the experiment name; the fourth and fifth positions represent the calendar year in which the first data point in the file was taken (15, 2015); the sixth, seventh and eighth characters are an alphanumeric code for the site name (TR1, TR2 etc.); the ninth and tenth characters represent the instrument position on the platform, where 01 is the top-most. Next is a two or three-character code for data type (vec, Nortek Vector; alt, EofE Altimeter). The Nortek Vector data were downsampled to 1Hz for simplicity; these files are denoted by a suffix of ‘-1Hz’.

Nortek Aquadopp data collected during the same experiment were added to this data release. Aquadopp data were processed as noted in Process Steps 1 and included in the zip files for the appropriate tripod (T1, T2, T3) and mooring (M00). Aquadopp data files follow the same naming convention as in Process Step 2, with a 3-character code (aqd) suffix indicating the data type. In addition to including these new data, Start and End dates in the internal metadata within the netCDF files of the Version 1 data release were corrected in Version 2. Finally, a sentence was added to Process Step 2 to indicate that the Nortek vector data were downsampled to 1Hz. None of the actual v.1 data themselves were altered.
