Abstract:
The data in this release map Marconi Beach, Head of the Meadow Beach, and Nauset Light Beach, in Cape Cod National Seashore (CACO), Massachusetts, before and after Hurricane Lee in September 2023. U.S Geological Survey personnel conducted field surveys to collect topographic data using global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) at all three beaches. In addition, at Nauset Light Beach, an uncrewed aerial system (UAS) was used to collect images with a Ricoh GRII camera for use in structure from motion photogrammetry. High-precision GNSS targets (AeroPoints) were used as ground control points (GCPs) for the UAS photogrammetry. Agisoft Metashape (v. 2.0.1) software was used to create a digital surface model and an orthomosaic from the collected imagery and GCPs. Photos were taken with smartphones for environmental context. This work was conducted under National Park Service Research Permit CACO-2020-SCI-0021.
Purpose:
The ground control points (GCPs) are for georeferencing the structure from motion (SfM) project and the GPS data are to provide topographic context for the pressure sensors of WHCMSC Field Activity 2023-023-FA.

The ground control points were processed with the following steps:
1. AeroPoints were deployed across the survey area. AeroPoints were left on for at least 1 hour and up to 2 hours to collect data.
2. Once connected to Wifi, the AeroPoint data were uploaded and run through a Propeller post-processing kinematic algorithm. The data were exported the horizontal datum NAD83(2011) to produce latitude, longitude, and ellipsoid heights, and then UTM Zone 19N and NAVD88 using GEOID 18 were used to produce UTM coordinates and orthometric heights. These were exported to a CSV file 2023022FA_HxLee_NBL_Aeropoints.csv

The GPS data were collected and processed as follows. At Head of the Meadow and Marconi beaches a base station was setup on a known reference mark and RTK corrections were broadcast to a rover. At Nauset Light Beach instead of a base station a wifi connection was used to connect the rover to the Massachusetts CORS network. The rover was then used at each beach to take points along cross-shore transects before and after Hurricane Lee and on the top of the posts where pressure sensors were attached. GPS data was exported from the rover in the horizontal datum NAD83(2011) to produce latitude, longitude, and ellipsoid heights, and then UTM Zone 19N and NAVD88 using geoid 18 were used to produce UTM coordinates and orthometric heights. These were exported to a CSV file 2023022FA_HxLee_GPSdata.csv.
