The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) had a need for detailed bathymetric maps of marine disposal sites off the islands of Oahu, Kauai, Maui, and Hawaii. The maps generated in 1998 became the base maps for future studies to determine the ultimate volume and eventual fate of the dumped material.
The USGS needed accurate bathymetric maps to help unravel the fate of sediment that has been transported across the reefs and onto the insular slope of Mamala Bay, Oahu.
The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) established the Hawaiian Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary between the islands of Maui, Molokai, Lanai, and Oahu. No accurate bathymetric maps existed for this large area and little was known about the nature of the bottom sediments. Seafloor mapping by the USGS addreseds all these concerns in the Hawaiian Island areas.
