Abstract:
Sediment grain-size distributions, stable carbon isotope ratios (d13C), total carbon to total nitrogen ratios (C:N), short-lived radionuclides (Beryllium-7, Cesium-137, and Lead-210), concentrations of 76 parent and alkylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and concentrations of 33 per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) were measured in the northern reach of San Francisco Bay (San Pablo and Suisun Bays), and in stream beds of the lower reaches of Napa River and Sonoma Creek, 5 months and 20 months after the 2017 Atlas and Nuns wildfires. New sites for sediment geochemistry analyses added 20 months post-fire included the lower reaches of Petaluma Creek and Suisun Slough, and in marsh sediment on Napa River and Sonoma Creek.

Why was the data set created?

In October 2017, the Atlas and Nuns wildfires each burned over 20,000 hectares in the Napa River and Sonoma Creek watersheds in the north San Francisco Bay area of California. Contaminants in wildfire runoff can originate from anthropogenic activities, from geologic sources, or be created by fire itself, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). A linked terrestrial and marine sediment geochemical study was undertaken in Napa River and Sonoma Creek watersheds and in receiving waters of San Francisco Bay to explore sources and dispersal of sediment and contaminants in runoff from the Atlas and Nuns wildfires, and their potential impacts on downstream ecosystems.

    SEDIMENT COLLECTION: Sediment was collected from the seabed in the northern reach of San Francisco Bay (San Pablo and Suisun Bays) and in the tidal reaches of North Bay streams in April 2018 and June 2019. Seabed sediment was collected using a boat-deployed Petit Ponar benthic grab sampler. Stream bank sediment was collected by hand in Napa River and Sonoma Creek in March 2018 except at site NAP18-02, where a Petit Ponar benthic grab sampler was deployed from a dock. In 2018, stainless steel sampling tools were rinsed with ambient water between sites. PFAS sampling protocols were followed in 2019: stainless steel, glass, and polypropylene sampling tools were cleaned with a weak Liquinox anionic soap solution, rinsed with methanol, and rinsed with PFAS-free water provided by SGS-AXYS Lab between every sample. Marsh sediment was collected on Napa River and Sonoma Creek by hand in June 2019 from four stratigraphic depth intervals in each marsh.

    SEDIMENT GRAIN-SIZE AND TOTAL ORGANIC CARBON CONTENT: Sediment particle size distributions were determined at the USGS Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center sediment laboratory. To remove organic material, 10 milliliters of 35 percent hydrogen peroxide were added to 20 grams of sediment. The sample was heated to 250 degrees Celsius to remove any remaining hydrogen peroxide and was placed in an ultrasonic bath to liberate the less than 0.063 millimeter-diameter (fine) fraction. The sample was centrifuged for 1.5 hours in deionized water to remove soluble salts. Samples were funneled while wet through 2-millimeter and 0.063-millimeter mesh sieves to separate gravel-sized (greater than 2 millimeter), sand-sized (0.063 to 2 millimeter), and mud-sized (less than 0.063 millimeter) particles. The sand and gravel fractions were dried at 80 degrees Celsius and weighed. Five milliliters of sodium hexametaphosphate was added to the mud fraction and a 20 milliliter aliquot was taken from a 1 liter graduated cylinder to determine the weight of the mud. Total carbon and total inorganic carbon of bulk sediment were determined coulometrically (UIC, Inc.) at the USGS Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center Sediment Laboratory. Samples were run in duplicate. Coulometer performance was verified relative to a calcium carbonate reference material.     RATIOS OF STABLE CARBON 13/12 ISOTOPES (d13C) and TOTAL CARBON TO TOTAL NITROGEN (C:N): Dried and homogenized sediment was analyzed for d13C and C:N ratios using a CE Instruments NC2500 elemental analyzer interfaced to a ThermoFinningan Delta Plus XP isotope ratio mass spectrometer at the University of California at Santa Cruz Stable Isotope Lab. A decarbonation pre-treatment step consisting of fumigation with sulfurous acid removed inorganic carbonates.     SHORT-LIVED RADIONUCLIDE ACTIVITIES: Prior to quantification by gamma spectrometry, bulk sediment was oven-dried at 60 degrees Celsius and ground to a homogeneous grain size. Short-lived radioisotopes were determined at the USGS Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center (PCMSC) Radiochemistry Lab and at the USGS Menlo Park Gamma Counting Lab (MPGCL). Samples analyzed at PCMSC were packed into 10-milliliter polystyrene vials with air-tight caps and counted for 24 hours in a high-purity low-background germanium well detector. Samples analyzed at MPGCL were packed into 7-milliliter plastic vials and counted for 48 to 72 hours in a high-purity low-background germanium well detector. Beryllium-7 activities were counted the 477.6 kiloelectron volt (keV) peak, Cesium-137 activities were counted the 661.6 keV peak, and unsupported Lead-210 activities were quantified by subtracting Lead-210 activities counted at the 46.52 keV peak from the average of supported Radium-226 activities counted indirectly at the Lead-214 351.9 keV peak and Bismuth-214 609.3 keV peak. Detector efficiency for Cesium-137 was determined using National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Standard Reference Material 4350B (at MPGCL) and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Standard Reference Material 300 (at PCMSC). Detector efficiency for Lead-210 was determined using IAEA standards RGU-1 and RGTh-1. Detector efficiency for Beryllium-7 was calculated by interpolation between the efficiencies of Lead-214 at 351.9 keV and Cesium-137 at 661.6 keV (at MPGCL) and between efficiencies of the Lead-214 peak at 351.9 keV and Bismuth-214 peak at 609.3 keV (at PCMSC).

    PARENT AND ALKYLATED POLYCYCLIC AROMATIC HYDROCARBON (PAH) CONCENTRATIONS: Conventionally frozen marsh and bay sediments collected in 2019 (n=34), freeze-dried stream sediments collected in 2018 (n=4), and freeze-dried bay sediments collected in 2018 (n=6) were sent to SGS AXYS Analytical Services Ltd. for quantification of 76 parent and alkylated polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs), which include polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), by method MLA-021. Sediment was spiked with surrogate standards, Soxhlet-extracted with dichloromethane, and cleaned up with column chromatography and activated copper. PACs were quantified by isotope dilution low resolution gas chromatography mass spectrometry in multiple ion detection mode to acquire data for target analytes and paired surrogates to minimize false positive identifications. Sediment was spiked with surrogate standards, solvent extracted with basic methanol or acetic acid, cleaned up with a solid phase extraction on a weak anion exchange sorbent, and spiked with recovery standards.   1. How well have the observations been checked?
    GRAIN SIZE: Duplicate analyses of sediment grain size, run every 20 samples, are within 15 percent. TOTAL ORGANIC CARBON (TOC): TOC analyses were run in duplicate. Percent differences between duplicates range from less than 1 percent (8 samples) to 59 percent (Marsh19-06). The median TOC difference between duplicates is 3 percent (n=35). CARBON TO NITROGEN RATIOS: Precision of total carbon to total nitrogen ratios relative to reference materials of known composition is better than 1 percent. STABLE CARBON ISOTOPE RATIOS (d13C): The analytical precision of d13C ratios relative to internationally calibrated in-house reference materials is better than 0.2 permil. SHORT-LIVED COSMOGENIC RADIONUCLIDES: Sample activities were calculated by comparison to certified reference materials with the same geometry and counting time. Reported uncertainties include 1 standard deviation counting errors, detector efficiency, and background corrections. Radioisotope activities three or more times higher than reported uncertainties are considered to be statistically significant. POLYCYCLIC AROMATIC HYDROCARBONS (PAHs): Quality Control (QC) measures for PAHs included external calibration curves, internal standards, lab blanks, spiked matrix samples, and field and lab duplicates. All raw data are shown without censorship with corresponding QC flags and definitions. Percent recoveries of PAH compounds in spiked matrix samples are acceptable between 50 percent and 150 percent except for 1,4,6,7-Tetramethylnaphthalene, which is up to 200 percent. A field duplicate collected at SP19-05 has PAH concentrations that differed by 1 percent to 55 percent among compounds without quality control flags (n=64) and the median difference is 19 percent. A PAH Lab duplicate run on SP19-08 has concentrations that differed by 1 percent to 40 percent among compounds without quality control flags (n=64). The median difference is 13 percent. PAH weights and concentrations are reported with three significant figures (XX.X, X.XX, 0.XXX, and 0.0XXX) rather than a fixed measurement resolution. PER- AND POLY-FLUOROALKYL SUBSTANCES (PFAS): QC measures for PFAS included external calibration curves, internal standards, lab blanks, spiked matrix samples, and field and lab duplicates. Percent recoveries of PFAS compounds in spiked matrix samples are acceptable between 40 percent and 150 percent except for 8:2 Fluorotelomersulfonate, which is up to 170 percent. No PFAS were detected in the field duplicate. Lab duplicates were run on Marsh19-02 and Marsh19-07. One PFAS compound (PFOS) detected in both samples and their duplicates differed by 122 percent (Marsh19-02) and 15 percent (Marsh19-07), the former due to low concentration levels less than 5 times the Reporting Limit (RL). One PFAS compound (6:2 FTS) was detected in the duplicate of Marsh19-02 and not in the original sample but was only 3 times the Lab Blank value and should be considered an estimated maximum value. PFAS weights and concentrations are reported with three significant figures (XX.X, X.XX, 0.XXX, and 0.0XXX) rather than a fixed measurement resolution.
